Men's Tennis competes in first day of NCAA Individual Championships

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Jordan Theron and Quinn Wicklund won their first round of singles and Theron split his singles matches, winning one and losing the other on the first day of the men's NCAA Individual Championships. 

Jordan Theron and Quinn Wicklund won their first doubles match of the NCAA Tournament as they faced the University of Chicago. Theron and Wicklund took the first set 6-4, but fell in the second set, 4-6. In the third set, the Tigers got two early breaks and held their serves for a quick 4-0 lead. The Maroons finally held their serve and then broke the Tigers on a deuce point for a 4-2 Sewanee lead. Both teams held their serve in the next two games. The University of Chicago was serving to stay in the match, but Theron and Wicklund collected a deuce point to win the match. They will face the No. 3 seeded team, Bowdin on Monday at 3pm

Jordan Theron won his first round match against Ramon Vilarroig Martinex in straight sets. Theron and Martinez exchanged breaks of serve in the first set, but Theron held his serve for a 6-5 lead, and won a deciding deuce point to break Martinez and take the first set, 7-5. 

In the second set, Theron and Marteniz both held their serve in the opening games, but Theron got an early break for a 3-1 lead. Marteniz got a break back and held his serve to make it 3-4, but Theron regained the momentum and won the next two games for a 6-3 second set. 

In the round of 16, Theron faced Kael Shah of Denison. Shah took the first set 7-5, before Theron came back to force a second set with a 6-3 win. In the final set, Theron and Shah exchanged breaks of serves, before Shah broke again for a 4-2 lead in the final set. Serving for the set with a deuce point, Theron broke Shah to stay in the match. Theron held his serve for a 4-5 lead. Shah was serving for the match for the second set, but this time, the deciding deuce point went his way as he won the third set 6-4.
