Tigers drop round one in SAA tournament play to Centre

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Mike Lewishall, Blake Pou, and Jack Roode recorded two RBIs apiece, and John Bagwell collected three hits, but the Tigers stranded nine on base in an 8-11 loss to the number one seed Centre College in the SAA baseball tournament in Danville, Ky. on Thursday night.

Hunter Herndon, Roode, and Will Yarboro added two hits, Lewishall hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth, while Herndon and Yarboro added an RBI of their own.

Sewanee collected the first run of the game as Pou was hit by a pitch in the first inning with bases loaded to send Bagwell home. The Tigers collected five total over the fifth and sixth innings as Herndon, Yarboro, and Pou each collected an RBI single in the fifth and Roode plated two more with a two-RBI single up the middle in the sixth.

In the top of the ninth, Lewishall recorded a two-run home run, for his fourth homer in three games. However, Sewanee left the bases loaded in the first and two on in the fifth, missing chances to take the lead over Centre. A strikeout from Lewishall ended the first and two strikeouts from Lewishall and Luke Short ended the fifth.

The Colonels recorded 16 hits in the opener including three a piece for Connor Jackson and Karson Thompson while Ben Prather drove in four runs. Prather also started for Centre, pitching 4.1 innings giving up four runs on six hits. He walked two batters, hit three, and struck out four.

Sewanee starter Jake Walling lasted 1.2 innings allowing six runs on five hits and two walks. Joey Crews got the Tigers out of the second inning inducing a flyout before Matt Munn came in and pitched six innings in relief, striking out five, and giving up five runs on 11 scattered hits with two walks.

Sewanee started quickly with a one-out single from Bagwell. Roode got on base as Prather hit him with a pitch, and Yarboro got the bases loaded with two outs with a single to third base. Prather hit Pou for his second hit batter in the first inning, sending Bagwell home for the first run of the day.

The Colonels had a big inning in the bottom of the second that Sewanee was unable to answer, as they tacked on six runs with two outs off of four singles, two walks, and one double.

The Tigers cut the Colonels' deficit to two in the top of the fifth as the first three batters for Sewanee reached base. Herndon collected an RBI single, sending Charlie Teel home. Will Yarboro and Blake Pou also collected RBI singles, plating two more runs for the Tigers.

Centre, however, had an answer in the bottom of the fifth, collecting two RBI singles of their own and a sacrifice fly to plate three and regain their lead, 9-4.

The next inning, Teel was hit by his second pitch of the night in back-to-back at-bats, and a single from Herndon through the left side created a one-out two-on opportunity for Sewanee. Teel and Herndon both advanced a bag from a passed ball and a single up the middle from Roode sent both base runners home for a 6-9 game.

A two-out single down the right field line in the bottom of the eighth plated two more runs for Centre, before Munn induced a fly out to Jadon Fetrow at center field to end the inning for Sewanee, stranding two Colonels on base.

Roode started the top of the ninth with a double to right field, but Centre recorded a fly-out and a pop-out at the next two at-bats. With one-on and two-out, Lewishall homered to left field to get Sewanee within three, but a groundout ended the game for Sewanee.

The Tigers will face Hendrix tomorrow at 1:15 ET/12:15 CT as they enter the elimination bracket in the 2024 SAA Baseball championships.
