SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee scored five runs in the eighth to take the opener and
Luke Short's RBI single in the 11
th inning plated the winning run, helping the Tigers to a doubleheader sweep, 8-3 and 4-3, in baseball action here Saturday at Montgomery Field.
Sebastian Leinberger drove in two runs with a single and
Charlie Teel followed with a two-run double and Teel collected three hits, as Sewanee scored five runs in the eighth inning in an 8-3 victory.
Jack Roode and
Jadon Fetrow each posted two hits and Fetrow scored twice, backing six strong innings of relief from
Taj Donald (3-4). The righthander allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits with no walks and one strikeout.
Luke Bishop worked the first three innings for the Tigers, giving up one unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Colby James allowed three runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings for the Petrels with three walks and two strikeouts. Parker Spring (0-4) took the loss, giving up two runs on one hit in 2.2 innings with one walk, a hit batter and three strikeouts.
In the second game
Blake Pou was 4-for-5 and scored the winning run on Short's single to left over the drawn-in infield. Leinberger added two more hits and scored a run.
Henry Shields gave Sewanee five strong innings of relief after Oglethorpe scored three times in the top of the first. The lefthander got out of a jam in the third with runners on second and third and one out and a great relay from the outfield cut down the potential go-ahead run in the sixth. Shields allowed six hits with no walks and one strikeout.
Jake Walling (2-1) picked up the win with four scoreless innings, giving up three hits with one strikeout.
Dylan Quintilio tossed eight innings for the Petrels, allowing three unearned runs, scattering nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts. The Tigers plated three runs in the first and really never had another good scoring chance against the righthander.
Colin Stewart (4-2) suffered the loss, giving up one run on two hits with one strikeout in 2.1 innings.
In the opener, Teel tripled to leftcenter with one out in the first and scored on a groundout by
Hunter Herndon for an early 1-0 lead.
Oglethorpe evened the game in the third when Sam Mills led off with a single and Cooper Krause singled with one out, putting runners on the corners. Trey Kinnan bounced to first for what looked like a doubleplay, but Herndon's throw to second was wild, allowing the run to come across.
Sewanee got the run back in the bottom of the inning thanks to walks to
Jadon Fetrow and Teel. Herndon reached on an infield single and Roode's RBI single put the Tigers in front, 2-1.
Isaiah Pou singled to leadoff the fifth for the Petrels and the ball got past
Will Yarbro in leftfield, allowing Isaiah Pou to reach third. He scored on a wild pitch, evening the game at two.
Again the Tigers responded in the bottom of the inning thanks to a one-out single by Teel. Roode walked with two outs and Yarbro singled through the right side, plating the run for a 3-2 edge.
Oglethorpe tied the contest again in the eighth after a leadoff single from Shane Newsome. Krause and Kinnan both grounded out, pushing the runner to third, and Newsome scored on a wild pitch.
The five-run bottom of the eighth started with a hit by pitch by Yarbro. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Blake Pou and
Owen Andress walked before
Mike Lewishall was hit, loading the bases.
Fetrow's swinging bunt down the third base line turned into an infield single and an RBI. Leinberger then singled through the right side, scoring two runs, and Teel followed with a two-run double to right, extending the lead to 8-3.
The Petrels started quickly in the second game after a leadoff single by Krause and Isaiah Pou followed with a two-run homer to left. Brick Conway singled with one out and Mason Pearcy and Mills both walked, forcing a pitching change.
Newsome also drew a free pass, plating a run, for a 3-0 Oglethorpe advantage after a half inning.
The Tigers answered in the bottom of the frame when Leinberger led off with a single and Herndon chopped a single to third. Roode grounded out to second, pushing the runners to second and third, and Yarbro's sharp grounder went off the glove of the shortstop, bouncing into leftfield, allowing both runners to score.
Yarbro went to second on the throw to the plate and took third when a throw to second got away.
Blake Pou followed with a double just inside the third base bag, tying the game at three.
The Petrels threatened in the third after a leadoff single by Nick Tarantino, who took second on a groundout by Pearcy. Mills beat out a chopper to third for a single, putting the runners on the corners, and Mills took second on a wild pitch. Shields snagged a hard grounder through the midle by Newsome and Greg Johnson lined to shortstop to end the inning.
Oglethorpe had a chance to take the lead again, this time in the sixth, with a pinch-hit single by Carter Guarino with one out. With two outs Isaiah Pou doubled to the wall in rightfield, but Sewanee executed a great relay from
Blake Pou to Lewishall to Andress, cutting down Guarino at the plate to keep the game tied at three.
In the 11
th,
Blake Pou singled to center to start the frame and stole second. He went to third on a balk and scored on Short's single to left.
Sewanee hosts Covenant College for a doubleheader Tuesday at Noon and ends the home schedule next weekend with a three-game series against Centre on Saturday and Sunday.
