Baseball drops two games to Centre

SEWANEE, Tenn.Jack Roode and Will Yarbro each homered and Roode, Yarbro and Charlie Teel collected two hits apiece in the opener but Sewanee stranded 11 baserunners in a 9-4 loss to Centre College in baseball action Saturday here at Montgomery Field.

The Tigers (13-18, 4-13 SAA) managed just three hits in the second game in a 5-2 loss, with the big blow a three-run homer by Centre's Michael Lynch in the third inning. The two teams conclude the series Sunday with a single game at Noon.

Roode homered and drove in two runs while posting two hits while Will Yarbro added a solo homer and two hits, but the Tigers left the bases loaded in the fifth and seventh innings, missing chances to cut into the deficit in the opener. Roode flied out to deep rightcenter to end the fifth and Owen Andress lined out to center to finish the seventh.

The Colonels recorded 16 hits in the opener, including three apiece for Josh Cunningham, Ayden Lohr and Conner Jackson while Jackson drove in three runs.

Centre starter Luc Morgan (3-2) worked 6.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits. He walked two, hit two batters and struck out three, leaving with two runners on base in the seventh, though the Tigers plated just one run in the inning.

Sewanee starter Luke Bishop (2-3) lasted two-plus innings, allowing four runs on six hits with two walks. Matt Munn tossed six innings of relief, giving up five runs on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Each team scored twice in the first inning in the second game, including a sacrifice fly by Hunter Herndon and an RBI double from Yarbro. The Colonels (25-8, 12-5) took the lead for good in the third with Lynch's three-run shot.

Centre's Ben Prather (7-2) gave up two runs on three hits in the seven-inning game, walking one and striking out three while getting lots of weak contact from the Tigers.

Sewanee's Taj Boyd (3-5) pitched well but made the one bad pitch to Lynch. The righthander allowed five runs on six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

The Tigers took an early lead with a run in the first inning of the opener after Sebastian Leinberger was hit to start the frame. He went to second on a bad pickoff throw to first by the catcher, moved to third on a groundout from Teel and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Herndon.

The Colonels answered in the second inning with a leadoff single by Lohr and Chase Austin walked. Jamie Laframboise tried to bunt and failed but moved the runners with a high chopper to third.

With the infield in, Jackson's pop-up to short rightcenter fell between the second baseman and both outfielders, with Lohr scoring on the play, but Bishop got out of the jam with a line drive and a groundout with the score tied at one.

Prather doubled high off the rightfield wall to start the third inning for Centre and Evan Weyler followed with an RBI single to center. Lynch singled through the middle, putting runners on the corners, and Lohr's double to leftcenter plated a run and ended the day for Bishop.

Austin's sac fly to center pushed across a run but reliever Joey Crews got a popout and Jadon Fetrow made his second diving catch in three innings to end the frame with the Colonels in front, 4-1.

Centre loaded the bases in the fourth with infield singles by Karsen Thompson and Cunningham and a single to right from Weyler, but Munn induced a 3-2-3 doubleplay from Lynch to end the threat.

Roode belted his third home run of the season with one out in the bottom of the inning, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

In the fifth Lohr singled to right and stole second before taking third on a groundout by Laframboise. With two outs Jackson dumped an RBI single into short left and Thompson and Cunningham both followed with singles, loading the bases, before a walk to Prather forced in a run. Thompson scored on a wild pitch for a 7-2 Colonels advantage.

In the bottom of the inning Leinberger was hit with two outs and Teel singled off the glove of the first baseman before a walk to Herndon loaded the bases. Roode drove a ball to the wall in rightcenter but Lohr tracked it down, ending the inning.

The Colonels added to the lead in the sixth after a two-out walk to Austin. Laframboise was hit and Jackson followed with an RBI double down the leftfield line.

Yarbro's leadoff solo homer in the bottom of the sixth, also his third of the year, cut the Centre lead to 8-3.

Cunningham and Prather both singled to leadoff the seventh for the Colonels and Weyler's chopper to third pushed the runners to second and third. Lynch's sacrifice fly to center made it 9-3 for the visitors.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning with singles from Leinberger and Teel and a walk to Herndon. Roode's sacrifice fly plated a run and Yarbro followed with a walk, but Andress flied out to end the inning with Sewanee still trailing, 9-4.

Centre started quickly in the second game, with Prather and Weyler both doubling before an RBI single from Lynch for a 2-0 lead after a half inning.

Sewanee answered in the bottom of the frame, starting with a chopper over the head of the third baseman by Leinberger. Teel was hit and Roode pushed the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Herndon's line drive to center plated a run and Yarbro followed with an RBI double down the rightfield line, evening the game at two.

The Colonels regained the lead in the third inning thanks to a leadoff walk to Prather and a single to center by Weyler. Lynch hit a three-run homer down the rightfield line for a 5-2 advantage for Centre.

Teel walked with one out in the bottom of the inning and Roode singled to rightcenter, putting runners on the corners. Herndon lined to right, where Lohr made a great diving grab. Teel tagged up at third but was called out for leaving early, ending the inning with the Tigers still trailing, 5-2.

Prather retired the final 12 batters of the game, never allowing the Tigers another chance at scoring.
