Late errors cost Tigers in series-opening loss

SEWANEE, Tenn.Sebastian Leinberger posted two hits with a run scored and one RBI, but Sewanee committed a pair of errors in the ninth, leading to two unearned runs, in Oglethorpe's 4-2 victory over the Tigers on Friday at Montgomery Field.

The two teams finish the three-game series Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.

With the game tied at two in the ninth, Shane Newsome reached on a throwing error by Sewanee third baseman Charlie Teel to leadoff inning. Cooper Krause sacrificed the runner to second, but Teel's throw to first was wild again, pushing the runners to second and third with no outs.

Trey Kinnan grounded out but Jonathan Cruz flied out to shallow right. The throw by Blake Pou was to the first base side of the bag and in time to get the runner, but catcher Jack Roode dropped the ball trying to catch the throw and make the tag, allowing the run to score. Brick Conway then singled through the right side, plating another run for a 4-2 Petrels (14-14, 8-5 SAA) lead.

The Tigers (11-16, 2-11) went down in order in the bottom of the ninth. The club managed just five hits and didn't take advantage of four walks issued by Oglethorpe.

Sewanee starter Ryan Moll worked three innings, giving up two runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Matt Munn (2-4) suffered the tough-luck loss, allowing two unearned runs on five hits in six innings, walking three with four strikeouts.

Oglethorpe starter Will Marconi tossed six innings, allowing two runs on four hits. The righthander walked three and struck out six. Outside of the two-run third inning, the Tigers did not have more than a single baserunner in any of the other five innings of work by Marconi.

Colin Stewart (4-1) picked up the win with three shutout frames, giving up one hit with one walk and one strikeout.

Oglethorpe had a pair of runners in the first inning, with a one-out double by Kinnan followed by a single from Cruz, but Moll got a strikeout and a lineout to right to end the threat.

The Petrels took an early lead with two runs in the second inning after a leadoff single by Nick Tarantino and a double down the leftfield line from Isaiah Pou. Sam Mills followed with a two-run single to center, but Moll ended the inning with a pair of groundouts and a fly ball.

Sewanee got the two runs back in the third thanks to an infield leadoff single by Mike Lewishall, who went to second on a chopper from Jadon Fetrow. Leinberger's line drive single to left plated Lewishall and after a passed ball and a deep fly ball to right by Teel, Hunter Herndon's two-out single to left scored Leinberger, evening the contest at two.

The game was delayed in the top of the fifth for nearly 30 minutes after the home plate umpire was injured by a foul ball to the mask.

In the sixth Conway walked to start the inning for Oglethorpe but was erased by a 4-6-3 doubleplay. Tarantino singled with two outs but was stranded after a groundout from Pou.

Krause walked to two outs in the seventh for the Petrels and Kinnan followed with a single to center, but Munn struck out Cruz to end the inning.

Sewanee threatened in the bottom of the seventh after a two-out single by Leinberger. Teel reached on an error, but Cruz made a nice backhanded stop up the middle on a ball hit by Herndon, flipping to Conway for the force at second, just beating Teel to the bag to end the threat.

Roode walked to start the eighth for the Tigers and Will Yarbro sacrificed him to second, but Roode took a big turn and Oglethorpe first baseman Mason Pearcy threw behind the runner and picked him off.
