Second-half shutout propels the Tigers to the SAA Finals

DANVILLE, Ky. – Phelps Thomas and JM DuPree collected three points each as the Tigers shut out Berry in the second half of the SAA semifinals in men's lacrosse action on Friday evening in Danville, Ky.

Sewanee came out of halftime fast as they earned a man-up opportunity off of a slashing call, the Tigers capitalized as Devon Root connected with Niko Maheras just 41 seconds into third-quarter play. Thomas recorded his first goal of the day with an assist from DuPree just over three minutes later.

DuPree got the Tigers within two with an unassisted goal with 9:42 on the clock. A caused turnover and ground ball from Jack Selner led to another Sewanee goal from Thomas with an assist from Griffin Peterson. A faceoff win from Drew Perun gave the Tigers possession with 57 seconds to play and Peterson this time found the back of the net for a 6-6 game with eight seconds left in the third quarter.

Manoli Loupassi found Thomas to give the Tigers the lead with 9:12 to play in the semifinal game. A little over three and a half minutes later, Devon Root tacked on the final goal of the game for an 8-6 Sewanee lead.

The Tigers had a slow start to the game as the Vikings collected the first five goals. JM DuPree got the Tigers on the board with 11:15 to go in the second quarter. Berry tacked on the final goal of the first half, and their final goal of the game with 7:55 left to play.

From the X, Perun was 12-of-17, collecting his 400th career faceoff win. Perun also picked up nine ground balls.
