Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse falls in SAA Championship Thriller

DANVILLE, Ky. – The SAA Championships was tied going into the final seconds but Centre tacked on a goal with 30 seconds on the clock to defeat Sewanee 10-9 in the finals of the men's lacrosse tournament on Sunday in Danville, Ky.

Manoli Loupassi found the back of the net 47 seconds into the game, in between the legs of the goalie for the first goal of the game. Centre got on the board with 6:57 left in the first quarter before they took the lead with 2:50 left to play in the first.

Niko Maheras tied the game at two a piece with 16 seconds left to start the second quarter with a tie game.

Centre collected three unanswered goals in the second quarter as they held the Tigers scoreless.

Charles Moran got the Sewanee offense restarted with a goal to open the second half with an assist from Loupassi. The Colonels answered just over a minute later as David Caldwell picked up a ground ball and found the back of the net.

A ground ball pick up from Moran led to a Zach Crain goal just over two minutes later. The Colonels won the resulting face-off which led to another Centre goal for a 7-4 game.

Sewanee collected two unanswered goals to end the third period and get within one of Centre. The first goal came off a Centre turnover and Devon Root found the back of the net. Corbet Darden tacked on the second with 48 seconds left in the quarter.

Loupassi tied the game at seven with 12:40 left to play in the championships. Centre found an answer from a failed Sewanee clear to gain the lead.

A failed Centre clear, off of a caused turnover and ground ball from Crain resulted in another tie game with a goal from Darden. Drew Perun won the resulting faceoff, but a turnover in front of the goal allowed Centre to register another goal.

With 1:50 left to play, Root tacked on his second goal of the day after another failed Colonel's clear.

However, Centre tacked on the last goal of the game in transition to secure the SAA Championship title.

Perun dominated the X, winning 14-of-22 face-offs with eight ground balls. In goal for the Tigers, Greg Ix registered his career-high 17 saves.

Alec Jazaeri and Crain collected two caused turnovers as Jazaeri collected two ground balls and Crain picked up one.

Loupassi led the Tiger's offense with three points off of two goals and an assist, Darden and Root both registered two goals, and Crain, Moran, and Maheras tacked on one apiece.

The Tigers were regionally ranked seventh while Centre was ranked sixth.
