Softball drops final conference doubleheader at Centre

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Hannah Wilson and Maggie Barker collected three hits in the second game as a strong third inning kept the Tigers in the game, but Centre plated a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to take the first game, and the Tigers fell in a doubleheader on Saturday in Danville, Ky.

Wilson and Sarah Storsteen collected three RBIs, and Ansley Giffin collected two from one at-bat.

Sydney Tackett, Abbie Buckner, and Storsteen collected two hits and Eve Bournias and Giffin tacked on one in game one.

Sewanee started the first game out strong, as a single to right field from Wilson sent Tackett home in the first inning to collect an early run for the Tigers.

Centre collected an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the first, off of a double to right field. Reagan Huskey got the Tigers out of their two errors in the first inning with a pop-out to first and a fly-out to left field.

Centre posted a big second inning, driving in five runs, starting with a two-run home run, before a two-RBI single, and a double. Hannah Hollis came in for the Tigers to pitch, inducing a line out and ground out to end the big inning for the Colonels.

The Tigers immediately answered in the top of the third. Buckner doubled to right field and advanced to third to start the top of the third inning. Madilyn Parker reached first on an error, allowing Buckner to plate the Tigers' second run. A double from Barker followed by a walk from Wilson, got the bases loaded with one out for the Tigers. An error by the Colonels allowed Parker to plate another run. Sarah Storsteen plated a two-RBI, single before advancing to second. Ansley Giffin, hit a double to right field, sending Crockett and Storsteen across the plate for a six-run inning, taking the lead, 7-6.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Colonels took the lead again, as Andrea Searcy hit a three RBI double with three outs to take the lead, 9-7.

Sewanee cut the Colonels lead to one as a single from Storsteen drove Wilson in.

In the top of the sixth, Sewanee took the lead with a two-RBI single from Wilson, plating Barker and Tackett.

Two back-to-back doubles from Centre in the bottom of the sixth tied the game at 10-10 before Huskey reentered and closed out the inning for Sewanee.

Neither time was able to answer until the bottom of the 10th inning when Centre tacked on the game-winning run.

In the second game, Centre sent one home in the bottom of the second to take an early lead that they never conceded. The Colonels then collected three more in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings but left three on base.

The Tigers collected only four hits in the second game and stranded five on base, dropping the second game of the day 0-7. Tackett posted two hits and Buckner and Parker collected one each.

Sewanee will play the last game of the series, tomorrow at Noon ET/ 11 a.m. CT in Danville, Ky.
