SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Sydney Tackett,
Maggie Barker and
Sarah Storsteen each collected two hits but Sewanee stranded nine runners in a 4-2 loss to Centre College in softball action in the regular season finale Sunday in Danville, Ky.
The Tigers (10-30, 6-12 SAA) pulled within 4-2 with an RBI single from Barker in the seventh but stranded the tying runs on base. Sewanee also left two runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings and at least one runner in every inning but the first.
Centre (16-22, 8-10) plated three runs in the second inning on a bases-clearing double from Morgan Tabor and that was enough for Colonels pitcher Kaylee Gregory (4-6), who allowed two runs on seven hits in a complete game. She walked three, hit a batter and struck out two.
Reagan Huskey (7-14) suffered the loss, giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits in six innings. She walked three and struck out one in her eighth complete game of the season.
Andrea Searcy singled to leadoff the second inning for Centre and Rylie Bentley walked before an infield single by Hailey Watson loaded the bases with one out. Tabor doubled into rightcenter with two outs, clearing the bases and giving the Colonels a 3-0 advantage.
In the fourth Tackett and Barker both singled to start the frame. Storsteen's ground ball forced out Barker at second and Storsteen stole second, but
Ansley Giffin grounded out to end the inning.
Zoe Crockett walked to leadoff the Sewanee fifth inning and moved to second on a groundout by Huskey.
Abbie Buckner's fly ball to right pushed Crockett to third and
Madilyn Parker's double plated the run, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Centre added an insurance run in the sixth when Lydia Rice reached on an error, but Huskey got the next two batters out. Caroline Unruh then walked and Hailey Watson followed with an RBI single to left for a 4-1 Colonels lead.
In the seventh Huskey walked to start the inning and Buckner followed with a free pass. Tackett's ground ball forced out Buckner at second, but Barker plated a run with a single to left.
Hannah Wilson grounded out to end the contest.
Sewanee begins play in the SAA Championships this Friday.
