SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Jadon Fetrow and
Mike Lewishall each collected three hits and
Charlie Teel and
Blake Pou drove in two runs apiece, but Berry scored multiple runs in five innings in a 16-10 win against Sewanee in baseball action Saturday in Mt. Berry, Ga.
The Vikings (28-12, 14-7 SAA) won the second game of the doubleheader as well, 5-0, sweeping the series against the Tigers (14-23, 5-16) to end the regular season.
Sewanee took a 2-1 edge in the opener thanks to an RBI single from Teel and a bases-loaded walk to
Hunter Herndon, but Berry regained the lead with two runs in the third and five in the fourth.
The Tigers answered with a seven-run fifth inning for a 9-8 advantage, including an RBI double by Lewishall, run-scoring single from Fetrow and a sacrifice fly by Teel. Roode's bases-loaded walk scored a run, another came across on a wild pitch and Pou's two-ruin double gave Sewanee the lead, which was short-lived.
Berry came right back with five runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back the rest of the way, adding two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to pull away.
Henry Collins tossed two innings to start the game, allowing an unearned run, and
Taj Donald struggled in two innings, giving up seven runs on six hits with four walks.
Ben Weiser (0-2) gave up the lead in the fifth to take the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in one-third of an inning.
The Vikings used eight pitchers in the contest, with Tyler Cassidy (3-1), the fifth pitcher of the day, posting the win with one scoreless inning in the sixth. Starting with Cassidy, the final four hurlers worked one inning apiece, giving up one run on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Jackson Collett tossed three scoreless innings to start the second contest for Berry and Cassidy got the win in that game as well with one scoreless frame in the fourth. Cinch Smith, Cole Porter and Will Marquart all pitched in both contests, each working one scoreless frame in both outings.
The trio closed out the second-game shutout, with Berry giving up five hits with two walks and five strikeouts as a staff in the 5-0 victory.
Jack Merrill (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Ryan Moll tossed 3.2 innings in relief, giving up two runs on five hits.
Alex Knapp reached on an error to start the bottom of the first in the opener, taking second on the play and stealing third. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Brunswick.
In the second inning
John Bagwell and Lewishall both singled and
Sebastian Leinberger walked, loading the bases. Teel's single through the right side plated a run and Herndon followed with a free pass, pushing across another for a 2-1 Sewanee edge.
In the third Joey Garcia singled to start the frame and Brunswick reached on an error, one of five in the game for the Tigers. Riley Uhls pushed the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt and after a walk to Andrew Pendleton loaded the bases, Levi Cloud scored two runs with a single through the left side.
Garrett Lang walked to leadoff the Berry fourth inning and Caleb Spikes reached on a bunt single, with both runners moving up on an errant throw to first by the Tigers' catcher, Roode. With two outs Brunswick walked, loading the bases, and Uhls followed with a two-run single. Pendleton doubled down the rightfield line, plating two more runs, and Cloud's RBI single up the middle pushed the Vikings' lead to 8-2.
Sewanee answered with a seven-run fifth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate, starting with singled from Pou and Bagwell. Lewishall doubled home a run and Fetrow followed with an RBI single. Leinberger walked, loading the bases, and Teel plated a run with a sac fly.
Herndon reached on an error, extending the inning, and Roode walked, forcing in a run. Leinberger came across on a wild pitch and with two outs, Pou doubled down the rightfield line, scoring two runs for a 9-8 Tigers edge.
Spikes and Knapp both singled to leadoff the bottom of the inning for Berry and Garcia walked, loading the bases. Brunswick's sac fly tied the game and Uhls plated two runs with a double. Pendleton added another sac fly for an 11-8 Vikings advantage.
It stayed that way until the seventh when Garcia was hit and Brunswick moved the runner with a sac bunt. Uhls singled to left, scoring a run, and after a walk to Pendleton, Cloud's single to center plated another, pushing the Berry lead to 13-9.
In the eighth Lang singled and Spikes walked before a bunt single by Knapp loaded the bases. Garcia was hit, forcing in a run, and Brunswick collected a sac fly, before the final run came across on a groundout by Uhls.
In the ninth Teel was hit with one out and with two outs, Roode walked before an RBI single by
Will Yarbro.
Berry started the second game with three runs in the first after Knapp and Garcia both singled. Uhls plated a run with a one-out single and Pendleton followed with a sac fly. Uhls stole third and scored on a throwing error by the Tigers.
In the fifth Spikes beat out an infield single and took second on a bad throw on the play. Knapp then singled up the middle, scoring a run, and he took second on the throw to the plate. After a groundout, Brunswick's RBI single through the left side gave the Vikings a 5-0 advantage.
Sewanee will play a best 2-of-3 series next weekend in the first round of the SAA Championships.
