SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Mike Lewishall went 5-for-5 with five RBIs, including three home runs, and
Hunter Herndon added three hits, backing up seven strong innings from
Matt Munn in Sewanee's 10-2 victory over Berry College in the first game of a best-of-3 series in the opening round of the SAA Championships on Friday in Mount Berry, Ga.
The two teams play again Saturday at 1 p.m. ET and an if necessary game would follow 30 minutes after the completion of that contest.
Lewishall belted a three-run homer in the fourth inning, breaking a scoreless game and part of a five-run inning for the Tigers, and added solo shots in the sixth and seventh innings, staking Sewanee to a 9-0 lead.
Jack Roode added a solo shot as well for the Tigers.
Jake Walling tossed two scoreless innings in the start for Sewanee, walking one without giving up a hit. Munn worked the final seven frames, allowing two runs while scattering nine hits. He walked one and struck out four, running into trouble in the seventh and eighth innings but limiting the damage.
Charlie Teel collected two hits and scored twice while
John Bagwell added two hits and Roode drove in three runs for the Tigers in the win.
Berry had the first good scoring chance of the game in the third thanks to a two-out error by the Tigers and a single from Alex Knapp before Joey Garcia popped out to end the inning.
In the fourth
Will Yarbro and
Blake Pou both singled with one out and Lewishall followed with a three-run blast to leftcenter, but Sewanee wasn't done in the inning.
With two outs
Jadon Fetrow doubled before a run-scoring triple by Teel. Bagwell's RBI single plated another run for a 5-0 Sewanee advantage.
Lewishall led off the sixth with a home run to left and in the seventh, Herndon collected his second double of the game and Roode followed with a two-run shot to right. Two batters later Lewishall registered his third homer of the game, again to left, extending the lead to 9-0.
Levi Cloud got the Vikings on the board with a solo homer in the seventh and two-out singles by Garrett Lang and Caleb Spikes and a walk to Knapp loaded the bases, but against Garcia flied out to end the inning.
In the eighth Teel singled, went to second and third on balks and scored on Herndon's single to right.
Riley Uhls doubled with one out in the Berry eighth and came across on a single by Andrew Pendleton. Austin Jetmore singled with two outs before Lang grounded out.
