Tigers secure Senior Day win over Centre, 11-5

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Mike Lewishall homered and Lewishall and Herndon collected three hits a piece as Sewanee defeated Centre at home 11-5. The Tigers honored their nine seniors in their last home game of the season at Montgomery Field. 

Henry Collins started at the mound for the Tigers, collecting a pop-out and then two strikeouts for three up and three out in the first inning. Jack Roode singled to second base with two outs but was stranded on base.

A single homerun from Michael Lynch opened the second inning, but Connor Jackson grounded into a double play and a flyout ended the inning.   

Will Yarboro walked to open the bottom of the second, and a double to left center from Blake Pou sent Yarboro home for a 1-1 score. With two outs, a single to right field from Jadon Fetrow collected a run from Pou. Fetrow stole second, and a single up the middle from Sebastian Leinberger gave the Tigers their third run of the inning. Leinberger advanced to second off a stolen base and then to third on a throwing error from the catcher. A single down the right field line from Charlie Teel sent Leinberger home. A pick-off at first ended the inning for the Tigers. 

The Colonels collected two more runs in the top of the third off a double to center field and a single to right field. Ryan Moll, who came in for the Tigers, induced two strikeouts to end the inning as the Colonels stranded two on base. 

Roode started the third with a single up the middle. A single to right field from Hunter Herndon got two on with no outs for Sewanee. A sacrifice bunt from Will Yarboro Pou sent Roode and Herndon to second and third. A ground out from Blake Pou to shortstop sent Roode home. J.T. Carter was hit by a pitch for two on with two outs. Mike Lewishall hit the top of the fence in right field for a stand-up double, sending J.T. Carter and Blake Pou home. Jadon Fetrow hit the wall in the same place for another standup double, sending Lewishall home for an 8-3 Sewanee lead. 

Centre scored one run on a balk in the top of the fourth. In the top of the fifth, the Colonels tacked on another run off a sacrifice fly. 

Hunter Herndon got his 100th career hit in the bottom of the fourth with a double down the right field line, but was stranded on base.

Jake Walling induced a one, two, three inning in the top of the sixth, but Centre collected three outs on three batters to end the sixth inning. 

With two outs, Carter singled to center field and Lewishall homered to center field for a two-run home run for a 10-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh.

Walling collected two more strikeouts in the top of the eighth, before a ground out to second base ended the inning for Centre. 

The Tigers tacked on one more in the bottom of the eighth off a single from Herndon, sending Teel home. 

Centre started the ninth with a single down the right field line, but Lopez grounded into a double play for two outs. A fly out to right field secured the 11-5 win for Walling and the Tigers. 

Collins pitched 2 innings with two strikeouts, one hit, and three walks allowing three runs. Moll went 2.1 for the Tigers with three strikeouts, five hits and two runs. 

Walling recorded the win, pitching 4.2 innings allowing one two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. 

Sewanee travels to Covenant on Tuesday for a double header in Lookout Mountain, Ga. before heading to Berry this weekend for their last conference series.
