Tigers drop midweek doubleheader at Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Will Yarbro and Wilson Irvin homered, Hunter Herndon posted three hits and John Bagwell added two, but Sewanee dropped a doubleheader Tuesday, 7-5 and 6-5, against Covenant College at Lookout Mountain, Ga. 

The Tigers collected six hits in the first game but two runs scored on wild pitches, proving to be the difference in the contest. 

A ground out from Jack Roode in the first inning set Charlie Teel home for the first run of the day. However, Covenant tacked on three of its own in the bottom of the first inning on two wild pitches and a single to left field from Sam Cecil. 

In the top of the fourth, both Herndon and Owen Andress collected singles, and a stolen base from Andress allowed Herndon to come home, cutting the deficit to 3-2.. 

Covenant again answered in the bottom of the inning with a walk, an error, and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly from Kenny Mills sent one home for the Scots and a three-run homer from Zeke Gilbert added to the lead. 

Back-to-back singles from Herndon and Roode got two on with no outs in the sixth before Yarbro's three-run shot made it 7-5 Covenant.

Jack Merrill induced a doubleplay followed by a ground out to the third baseman to end the sixth inning. 

A ground out and two deep flyouts for the Tigers ended the first game. 

In the second game, a single up the middle from Ethan Williams sent Bagwell and Oliver Snell home to take the lead for Sewanee in the top of the seventh, but the Scots tied the game with another wild pitch in the bottom of the inning before collecting the walk-off. 

Matthew Kennedy came in to pitch for the Tigers with two on and no outs. Sewanee intentionally walked McBryar to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. The Tigers got the first out of the inning, as Williams got the out at home, but Kolby Kimberly scored the walk-off run on a fielder's choice, as the Scots took the second game, 6-5. 

The Tigers tallied the first run of the game in the second, as a single from Hudson Hefner sent Jake Glover home. The Scots answered in the bottom of the second with a two-run double to center field from Kimberly. 

Irvin tacked on the second home run of the day for Sewanee with one on and one out in the top of the third to retake the lead, 3-2. 

Covenant tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, but left two stranded as Henry Collins induced a ground out after inheriting two on with two outs. 

Sewanee travels to Berry this weekend for its final conference series of the year, playing a doubleheader on Saturday at Noon ET.
