SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Wilson Irvin recorded two hits with a double and two RBIs, but four Sewanee errors turned into six unearned runs in a 14-9 series-opening loss to Hendrix College in baseball action on a rainy and cool Saturday here at Montgomery Field.
The teams will finish the series with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
The Warriors (8-5, 1-0 SAA) scored four times in the first inning, three after an infield error, and added two more runs in the third, also after an infield miscue. Sewanee (6-6, 1-3) cut the deficit to 4-3 with three runs in the second and trailed 8-4 headed to the eighth before Hendrix posted three runs apiece in the final two innings. The Tigers plated four runs in the ninth but could not get the tying run to the plate.
Matt Munn (2-2) suffered the loss for Sewanee, though he pitched better than his stat line, allowing eight runs, four earned, on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Hendrix starter Bryson Bales (2-1) worked five innings, giving up three runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
Sewanee posted 11 hits as a team but only Irvin collected multiple hits.
Charlie Teel and
Hunter Herndon drove in two runs apiece for the Tigers.
The Warriors struck for four runs in the first inning, with three of those runs unearned thanks to an error.
Zach Marriott was hit to leadoff the contest and went to second on a balk. Owen Shaw's chopper was bobbled by
Sebastian Leinberger and then thrown away, allowing the run to score and Shaw to reach second. Hogan Ralston's one-out single to right plated Shaw for a 2-0 advantage.
With two outs Joseph Watts walked and back-to-back RBI singles by Ian Guthrie and Austin Rabago pushed the Hendrix lead to 4-0 after a half inning.
The Tigers got three runs back in the second inning, starting with a one-out double by
Mike Lewishall. Irvin drove home Lewishall with a two-out single to left and
Jadon Fetrow singled off the glove of the pitcher and Leinberger walked, loading the bases. Teel's two-run single to center cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Warriors answered in the third, again with the help of a Sewanee error. Drake Job led off with a single to center and Watts walked before a sacrifice bunt by Guthrie. Rabago grounded to short but Leinberger's throw to the plate was low and to the first base side, with the run scoring on the play. The ball fell out of the glove of catcher
Jack Roode on the swipe tag, getting away and allowing another run to come across.
Hendrix added to the lad in the fifth after a one-out double to Rabago, who stole third and scored on a chopper to second by Shaun Pope. Marriott walked, ending the day for Munn, and Shaw's double to rightcenter plated Marriott for an 8-3 Warriors advantage.
Sewanee got a run back in the sixth but missed a chance for more. Pou walked with one out and Irvin followed with an RBI double to deep leftcenter, but Fetrow grounded out and Leinberger struck out, ending the inning with Irvin at third and the Tigers down, 8-4.
The Warriors added three runs in the eighth, starting with an infield single by Adam Bland, who stole second and third. Job's infield single plated a run and Watts followed with an RBI triple before an RBI single by Charlie Deaton.
Will Yarbro led off the bottom of the eighth with a double and Lewishall walked. With two outs pinch-hitter
Luke Thompson was hit, loading the bases, and a run scored after a bad pickoff throw to second.
In the ninth Shaun Pope and Marriott both walked and Shaw's chopper to the right side turned into an infield single, loading the bases. Bland was hit, forcing in a run, before an RBI groundout by Ralston. Job's sacrifice fly to right plated the final run for Hendrix.
Alden Wright started the Sewanee ninth with a walk and Herndon belted a two-run homer to right. Pinch-hitter
Jonah Patton then singled up the middle and Pou scored the run with a double to rightcenter.
John Bagwell reached on an error by the second baseman, allowing another run to come across, and
Oliver Snell's infield single put runners on the corners, but
Luke Short struck out to end the game.
