Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball falls twice to Hendrix

SEWANEE, Tenn.Sebastian Leinberger and Charlie Teel each posted two hits but Sewanee stranded nine runners in a 6-1 loss after dropping the opener, 13-0, to Hendrix College in baseball action here Sunday at Montgomery Field.

The Tigers (6-8, 1-5 SAA) lost all three games in the series, leaving 26 runners on base in the three contests. Hendrix plated three or more runs in an inning six times in the series.

Aiden Leggett (1-0) tossed six shutout innings for the Warriors (9-5, 3-0) in the first game, allowing four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. The lefthander worked around an error and a single in the first inning and a walk and a single in the third and retired the side in order twice.

Luke Bishop (0-1) suffered the loss for the Tigers, giving up six runs on five hits in 2.2 innings. The righthander walked three and two strikeouts. Henry Collins worked 4.1 innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

In the second contest Leinberger scored the lone run after a leadoff single in the fourth, coming across on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Herndon. Taj Donald (1-3) pitched well but had one bad inning, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits with seven strikeouts.

David Blackburn (3-1) got the win for Hendrix, giving up one run on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

The Warriors took control of the opener with a four-run second inning, starting with a one-out walk Owen Shaw. Ian Guthrie followed with a double to deep leftfield and Joseph Watts walked, loading the bases.

Shaw scored on a wild pitch and Austin Rabago drove in a run with a single to center before an RBI double by Shaun Pope. Zach Marriott's groundout pushed across another run for a 4-0 Hendrix advantage.

Hogan Ralston walked to leadoff the third inning for the Warriors and Drake Job singled to rightcenter, putting runner on the corners. Shaw plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Watts singled with one out, ending the day for Bishop. Hendrix executed the double steal, though Watts was safe at second when the ball was dropped on a tag.

In the sixth Rabago walked to start the frame and Pope singled before a sacrifice bunt by Marriott. Ralston and Job both walked, forcing in a run, extending the Warriors lead to 7-0.

Hendrix added to the advantage in the eighth, with singles by Marriott and Adam Bland to open the inning before an RBI double from Ralston. Job then plated two runs with a single to center and Shaw lined a single off the glove of a diving Mike Lewishall at second base, putting runners on the corners.

Job scored on a balk and a one-out groundout by Watts pushed across the final run of the inning.

Donald retired the first nine batters of the game to start the second contest but walked Marriott to start the fourth inning and Bland reached on a bunt single. Shaw also bunted and Donald's throw to first was wild, getting past Lewishall, with one run scoring on the play.

Job then doubled into shallow center, just out of reach of a diving Jadon Fetrow, plating two runs. Diego Alvarado pushed the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt and Guthrie dumped a single into short center, scoring Job for a 4-0 Hendrix advantage.

The Tigers stranded a pair of runners in the first inning after singles by Leinberger and Herndon and left two on base in the fourth when Blake Pou singled and Lewishall walked.

Leinberger beat out an infield single in the fifth and went all the way to third on a bad pickoff attempt. He scored on a sac fly by Herndon, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

The Warriors added two runs in the sixth when Job was hit and Alvarado singled to rightcenter, putting runners on the corners. Job scored on a wild pitch and after a stolen base, so did Alvarado.

Sewanee travels to Pensacola, Fla., this weekend for six games in six days beginning Tuesday at Noon against Wisconsin-Platteville at Wahoos Stadium.
