SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sally Herrington tallied five goals and Raleigh Cooper and Claire Saverino both collected four points, but the Tigers narrowly fell to John Carroll in women's lacrosse action on Thursday night at Puett Field, 17-18.
John Carroll got out to a four-goal lead to start the game before Herrington tallied the Tigers' first goal with just over four minutes left in the period. The Blue Streaks posted another goal off a free-position shot off a caused turnover.
However, Sewanee collected two goals in the last 18 seconds of the period to get back within two. The first came from a free position shot by Morgan Boylan, and the second came from Herrington again with an assist from Cooper.
A draw-control win from Herrington to start the second period, led to a goal by Saverino 40 seconds in.
Cooper got her third assist of the night as she connected with Claire Dillard to get within one.
The Blue Streaks answered with another free position shot, but Marlin Price found Saverino immediately following the draw-control win from Herrington.
John Carroll went on a two-goal run, one coming from another free-position shot before Price ended their streak with a goal of her own.
However, the Tigers ended the second half with a two-goal run of their own, coming from Erika Bolcar and Elizabeth Muller.
A Sewanee turnover led to goal 11 for the Blue Streaks to start the second half, but the Tigers responded with two goals within 21 seconds of each other from Herrington and Muller to tie the game at 11.
John Carroll went on another two-goal run before Sewanee ended the period with a three-goal run to take the lead for the first time of the game. Price, Herrington, and Brooke Sigmon found the back of the net for Sewanee to end the third.
John Carroll tied the game at 14 with another free position shot before Cooper collected a free position shot for Sewanee.
The Blue Streaks strung together three goals in a row to go back up by two. Herrington cut the lead to one on a free position shot, but a caused turnover led to another Streaks goal.
Saverino brought Sewanee back within one after connecting on a free position shot. The Tigers had the ball with 30 seconds to go in the game, but could not connect as they fell, 17-18.
Both teams ended with 27 shots, but John Carroll's goalies recorded six saves to Sewanee's one.
Herrington led Sewanee with five points, while Saverino recorded three goals and an assist, and Cooper posted one goal and three assists. Muller and Price both collected three points a piece off of two goals and an assist. Sigmon collected two points with a goal and an assist, and Bolcar, Dillard, and Boylan all tallied one goal a piece.
Herrington registered nine draw control wins and Price followed with five. Dillard and Sigmon both tallied two a piece, and Bolcar registered one. Price also led the defense with two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
The Tigers return to play at Puett Field this weekend. They open conference play against Oglethorpe on Saturday at 2 p.m. before returning to non conference play against Southwestern on Sunday at 2.
