SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Hunter Herndon posted three hits and
Charlie Teel and
Will Yarbro added two apiece, but Cornell College scored five runs in the last three innings in a 6-3 victory over Sewanee in baseball action here Thursday afternoon at Montgomery Field.
The Tigers (6-5) scored single runs in the first and third innings, but the Rams (3-1) tied the game in the seventh and plated two runs each in the eighth and ninth innings, including a two-run homer in the ninth by Darren Mancke.
Sewanee starter
Ryan Moll worked three hitless innings, walking one and striking out one. He retired the first seven Cornell batters before issuing a walk.
Joey Crews (0-1), the fourth of six Tiger hurlers in the game, suffered the loss, allowing two runs on one hit with two walks in one-plus inning of work.
Kaleb Whaley (1-1) worked five innings for the win for Cornell, giving up one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Kale Rose got the final three outs for the save, allowing one hit and hitting a batter.
Teel doubled down the leftfield line with one out in the first and scored on a Herndon single through the right side for an early 1-0 lead.
In the third Herndon reached on an infield single and stole second before a walk to
Jack Roode.Yarbro's RBI single to right extended the advantage to 2-0.
The Rams got their first hit of the game with a leadoff triple off the rightfield wall by Sean Alvarez in the fourth and Rose followed with a run-scoring single to right but was thrown out trying to steal second. After a walk,
Henry Collins settled down, getting a strikeout and a fly ball to end the inning.
Will Berry struck out the first two batters of the seventh before a single to center by Vince Zipperer. Seth Beals doubled on an 0-2 pitch and Alvarez was intentionally walked. Rose also drew a free pass, forcing in a run, but Crews entered to get the final out, keeping the game tied.
Mancke drew a leadoff walk for the Rams in the eighth and Cade Parks followed with a single through the left side. A groundout put runners on the corners and pinch-runner Zach Garton stole second. Vince Tinajero's sacrifice fly plated a run and after a walk, Beals singled to left, scoring another run.
The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the inning but missed a chance for more.
Herndon led off with a single and Yarbro singled with one out, putting runners on the corners.
Jadon Fetrow grounded out, plating a run, and
Mike Lewishall singled before Will Irvin walked, loading the bases.
J.T. Carter flied out to end the inning with Sewanee still trailing, 4-3.
Teel singled and Roode was hit in the ninth, but Yarbro lined out to end the game.
Sewanee hosts Hendrix College for a three-game series this weekend starting with a Saturday doubleheader at 11 a.m. at Montgomery Field.
