SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Sebastian Leinberger collected four hits and three RBIs,
Jadon Fetrow added three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored and
Mike Lewishall also drove in three runs, but Rhodes College scored nine runs in its final four at-bats, holding off Sewanee, 13-12, in the baseball series finale Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.
The Tigers (11-15, 2-10) lost three one-run games against the Lynx after 8-7 and 10-9 results on Friday. Sewanee overcame a 4-0 deficit after the first inning, then tied the game at six with a run in the sixth and retook the lead with a three-run seventh, but Rhodes (17-9, 8-4) plated two runs apiece in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and three more in the eighth.
The Tigers scored three times in the ninth to pull within a run, but
Jack Roode grounded out to end the game with
Hunter Herndon, who posted three hits, on first.
Luke Bishop tossed four innings in a start for Sewanee, giving up six runs on six hits, while
Ryan Moll (1-2) worked three innings, allowing four runs on four hits with three walks.
Zac Sohosky started for the Lynx and gave up five runs on seven hits in five innings. Colby Slaughter allowed four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings before Thomas LeMaster (2-0) tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for the win. Mick Arney got the final two outs for the save.
The Lynx scored four runs in the first inning, taking advantage of an error by the Tigers.
Ben Burkhart was hit to leadoff the first and Cooper Kuriger reached on an error. The two runners stole and both scored on Dante Messina's single to left. With two outs Quinn Blackman belted a two-run homer for a 4-0 lead after an inning.
Sewanee got a run back in the second after a leadoff single by
Owen Andress and two-out walks to Lewishall and Fetrow. Leinberger's single through the left side plated a run.
In the third Herndon and Roode both singled and after a groundout by Andress pushed the runners to second and third,
Blake Pou's ground ball scored a run.
Will Yarbro walked before Lewishall hit a three-run homer, putting the Tigers in front, 5-4.
Austin Smith singled to leadoff the fifth for Rhodes and Burkhart followed with a two-run homer, putting the home team ahead, 6-5, but the Tigers answered in the sixth with a single by Fetrow, who stole second and scored on a double by
Charlie Teel.
Rhodes retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a walk to Clay Richardson, who stole second and came across on a single by Burkhart. Another stolen base led to an RBI single by Kuriger and an 8-6 Lynx advantage.
Sewanee came right back, though, with three runs in the seventh.
Andress was hit to start the frame and Pou walked. With two outs Fetrow's double to rightcenter plated two runs and Leinberger followed with an RBI single for a 9-8 Tigers edge.
Corbin Kinder walked with one out in the bottom of the inning and Blackman doubled down the leftfield line, putting runners on second and third. Malcolm Rohlfing scored a run with a sacrifice fly to center and Richardson's infield single plated another for a 10-9 Rhodes lead.
Burkart led off the eighth with a solo homer and Kuriger followed with a walk, moving to third on two wild pitches. Eli Selby's one-out single to center plated a run and after a wild pitch and a passed ball, Kinder's sac fly to left pushed the Lynx advantage to 13-9.
Yarbro walked to leadoff the ninth for the Tigers and after a groundout by Lewishall, Fetrow's single up the middle scored a run. Leinberger then doubled to leftcenter, plating Fetrow and cutting the deficit to 13-11.
Herndon's two-out single up the middle scored Leinberger, but Roode grounded out to end the game.
Sewanee returns home for the first time in four weeks next weekend, hosting Oglethorpe Friday and Saturday for a three-game series at Montgomery Field.
