Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Tigers fall in overtime to Oberlin

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Niko Maheras scored two goals in the last 1:26 seconds to send the game to overtime, but Oberlin scored first in overtime for an 8-7 win in men's lacrosse action on Monday night in Sewanee.

Defensively, Joe Orem led the Tigers with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, Brady Cole followed with two caused turnovers and Greg Ix and Jack Selner collected one a-piece. Drew Perun was 13-of-17 from the dot with 11 ground balls, and Asa Nischwitz was two for two with one ground ball.

A turnover by Oberlin and a ground ball pickup from Brady Cole led to the Tigers' first goal of the game from Sage Cookerly with an assist from Phelps Thomas. Oberlin tallied their first on a man-up opportunity, but Charles Moran connected with Payton Herleth to put the Tigers on top to end the first period.

The Yeomen posted the only goal of the second period, on an extra-man opportunity to send the game into half-time tied at two all.

Oberlin opened the second half recording three goals, but with 1:16 left in the period, the Tigers answered with three of their own. Devon Root registered the first two, capitalizing on a man-up opportunity with an assist from Zach Crain and Hudson Gregory. Finally, with seven seconds in the period, Manoli Loupassi tied the score at five all.

A goal with 8:26 on the clock by Jacob Starcke gave Oberlin the lead again. The Yeomen found themselves with another extra-man opportunity, where they were able to capitalize for a two-goal lead.

However, with 1:28 to play in regulation, Maheras collected a ground ball and found the back of the net for a one-goal game.

With two seconds on the clock, Moran connected with Maheras to send the game into overtime, tied at seven all.

Drew Perun won the faceoff to start overtime, but a save from Jake Pillsbury gave Oberlin the ball. However, Pillsbury turned over the ball giving Sewanee another opportunity, but the Tigers turned over the ball as well, giving the Yeomen back the ball. Lewis Moore deflected the ball into the back of the net to give Oberlin the overtime win with 1:32 on the clock.

The Tigers travel to Berry on Saturday to resume conference play in Rome, Ga. at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT.
