Tigers drop Sunday doubleheader against Maryville

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Kaylie Smith, Eve Bournias, and Sydney Tackett collected two hits, followed by a strong 7.1 innings pitched by Abbie Bucker in the second game, but the Tigers fell to Maryville in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon in Maryville, Tenn.

Sarah Storsteen collected three RBIs from one at-bat in the first game and Sydney Tackett collected two in the second.

Sewanee started out the second game strong, as Tackett grounded out to the pitcher but sent Bournias home in the first inning to collect an early run for the Tigers.

Maryville collected an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the first, off of a sacrifice fly, and Bucker got out of the inning with two on base by inducing a ground-out by the next batter.

Tackett sent Bournias in again in the top of the third to give the Tigers the one-run lead.

A solo home run from Maryville in the bottom of the fifth tied the score.

In the bottom of the seventh, Maryville threatened to take the lead as they had two on with one out, but Bucker induced a pop-fly to second base, and Maggie Barker got an unassisted out at third to send the game to extra innings. However, the Scotts drove in a run at the bottom of the eight to secure the win.

In the first game, Maryville sent two home in the bottom of the first to take an early lead that they never gave up. The Scotts collected three more in the bottom of the fifth but left two on base.

Sewanee responded in the top of the sixth, collecting four of their own. Sarah Storsteen got the inning going as a double with the bases loaded and two outs sent Tackett, Buckner, and Grace Black home. Storsteen then collected another run, this time unearned, as Hannah Wilson reached first on an error by the first baseman, and got the Tigers within one of the Scotts, 4-5.

However, the Tigers started out the bottom of the sixth with an error after a walk, and Maryville capitalized, scoring two unearned runs. The Tigers were unable to find an answer as they left one on base in the top of the seventh to end the first game.

Sewanee concludes their non-conference play as they host Augustina College on Wednesday for a doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m. before heading on the road to resume conference play at Rhodes on Friday and Saturday.
