Tigers fall to Augustana in a midweek double header

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Christian Cain and Hannah Wilson both collected their first home runs of the season in each game of the doubleheader against Augustana on Wednesday afternoon, but the Vikings collected both games of the day.

Wilson collected three hits on the day, and Cain, Sydney Tackett, Abbie Buckner collected two apiece.

Wilson converted the first hit of the day in game one, creating a bases-loaded opportunity for the Tigers with one out. Ansley Giffin reached on a fielder's choice, sending Abbie Buckner home for Sewanee's first run.

In the bottom of the fifth, Sarah Storsteen got the inning started for the Tigers with a single to center field. Wilson homered to center field, as the ball hit the fence and bounced over, collecting two more runs.

However, the top of the third secured the game for the Vikings as they collected eight runs off of seven hits. They sent four more in at the top of the fifth. Augustana won the first game in five innings, 15-3.

The Vikings started the second game with a solo home run in the first inning, but the Tigers responded by sending three home. Sydney Tackett and Abbie Buckner both singled to get on base. Storsteen reached first on an error, creating another bases-loaded opportunity.

A single from Wilson sent Tackett home and Ansley Giffin doubled to center field off a fielder's choice, as Emily Litchfield and Buckner came home.

In the top of the second, Augustina sent two in for a tie game at three a piece.

Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the fifth as the Vikings collected an unearned run for a one-run lead.

Sewanee answered in the next inning as Ansley Giffin opened the bottom of the fifth, with a triple down the right-field line. Cain homered to right-center on the next at-bat for a 5-4 game.

In the top of the sixth, the Vikings collected four unearned runs off of two errors from the Tigers. The Vikings collected a run off a single to left field, before they collected a grand slam for a 13-5 game in the top of the seventh.

Sewanee left two on base in the bottom of the seventh for the game.

The Tigers resume conference play this weekend as they travel to Rhodes for one game on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.
