Sewanee opens conference play with a 13-2 win over Oglethorpe

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Phelps Thomas collected five points on three goals and two assists as the Tigers opened conference play against Oglethorpe at home on Sunday afternoon with a 13-2 win. 

A Piedmont turnover and a ground ball from Stew Moxley led to the first goal of the day from Zach Crain with an assist from Hudson Gregory

With 3:41 on the clock, a caused turnover and ground ball from Devon Root started a run of three goals in a minute and forty seconds for the Tigers. Thomas collected a goal and an assist, Hawkins Schnabel collected the same, and Gregory collected a goal. 

Henry Westfall posted a last-second goal with four seconds on the clock as Sewanee ended the period up 5-0. 

The second period only saw three goals, with Sewanee claiming all three. Griffin Peterson connected with Thomas for the first, Charles Moran found Crain for the second, and Thomas scored the third. 

Oglethorpe collected their first goal of the day from a caused turnover to start the second period. 

A long offensive possession from the Tigers led to a goal from Sage Cookerly with an assist from JM DuPree for an eight-goal lead. 

Hank Walsh and Root collected two goals in just under a minute of each other. Sewanee gained possession from a caused turnover and ground ball from Cam Thornton before Thomas connected with Walsh. Asa Nischwitz won the resulting faceoff and Corbet Darden assisted Root for the Tigers' 11th goal. 

Manoli Loupassi opened the final period as he found the back of the net with an assist from DuPree. 

Jazz Washington recorded the Petrels' second goal of the day with 4:02 on the clock, but the Tigers immediately answered as Clay Upchurch won the faceoff and connected with David Powell for the final goal of the day 10 seconds later. 

Defensively, Schnabel led Sewanee with four ground balls and two caused turnovers and 12 other Tigers collected a caused turnover for the day. Nischwitz recorded seven ground balls for the as he went eight-of-twelve from the faceoff. Drew Perun was three-for-three with two ground balls, and Upchurch was one-of-two with a ground ball. 

Sewanee saw three different goalkeepers for the day with Flynn Bowman collecting four saves, Greg Ix recording two, and C.J. Mezzatesta posting one. Xay Duax, in goal for Oglethorpe, collected 25. 

The Tigers travel to Birmingham-Southern on Friday, March 22 before returning home for a Monday game against Oberlin College at 6 p.m. for their last non-conference game of the season at Hardee-McGee field.
