Big innings down the Tigers in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – Sydney Tackett collected four hits on the day, but the Tigers fell on the final day of the Tucson Invitational on spring break to Dickinson and Eastern Connecticut State University. 

In game one against Dickinson, Tackett sent home the first run of the day off of a double to right center as Abbie Bucker scored. Hannah Wilson sent Tackett in for a two-run lead of a single to left field. 

In the bottom of the first, Dickinson sent four runs. 

Christian Cain opened the second with a double to left center, but the Tigers left two on base, ending the inning with a ground out to the pitcher. Dickinson left three on base with one hit in the bottom of the second. 

Sewanee scored three in the top of the third. Wilson got the Tigers started with a double to right center and Zoe Crockett sent her home as she reached second with a bunt off an error by the pitcher. A ground out sent Crockett to third. Two back-to-back triples from the Tigers from Cain and Grace Black sent Crockett and Cain home. 

Dickinson also registered two at the bottom of the second maintaining their lead by one. Both teams left two on base in the fourth. 

Another Tiger triple from Eve Bournias in the top of the fifth sent Black home and the Tigers took the lead 6-5. In the bottom of the fifth, Sewanee held the Red Devils to none as they stranded two on base. 

The bottom of the sixth was the Tigers' demise as two back-to-back errors sent three in for Dickinson as they took the lead.

A ground-out to second base, a pop-out and a fly out to left center ended game one for the Tigers. 

In the second game the Tigers had a quick top of first as Ansley Giffin faced four batters and induced a fly out, pop-out and a fly out. 

With two on in the bottom of the second and no outs, a double down the right field line from Tackett sent Bournias and Bucker home. Crockett reached base on another error sending Tackett home in the process. Cain induced a groundout to second and Wilson scored for a 4-0 lead for Sewanee. A single to right center from Storsteen sent Crockett home and a ground out from Black sent Giffin home for a six run first inning. 

Two big innings from Eastern Connecticut State was the difference as major mistakes from the Tigers added to their success. The Warriors tallied six in the top of the third and six in the top of the fifth to secure the win in five innings. The Tigers sent two more home in the bottom of the third, but could not overcome their errors, losing in five innings, 17-8. 

Sewanee returns home to face Maryville in a double header on Sunday, March 24 at Maryville and then hosts a double header against Augustana College on Wednesday, March 27 at home.
