PENSACOLA, Fla. – In a game delayed nearly three hours after the bottom of the fifth, 25
th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater scored three runs in the first two innings and three more in the fifth in posting a 6-1 victory over Sewanee in baseball action here Friday at Wahoos Stadium.
Hunter Herndon collected two of the six hits for the Tigers (10-9), who stranded in the loss, ending a four-game winning streak. Sewanee ends the trip in Pensacola with a 10 a.m. contest against Lyon College on Sunday, weather permitting.
Taj Donald (1-4) suffered the loss, pitching much better than his scoreline would indicate, allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits. He walked four and struck out three. The Warhawks (8-3) produced soft base hits and grounders through the hole on multiple occasions.
Matt Munn tossed four shutout innings after the rain delay, giving up three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
UW-Whitewater starter Eli Frank (1-2) worked five innings for the win, allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts. Three Warhawks reliever tossed the final four frames, striking out five.
The Warhawks plated a single run in the first and two runs in the second before the Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the second, with
Will Yarbro scoring on a wild pitch. Sewanee missed a chance to add to the run total in the third, leaving the bases loaded.
UW-Whitewater added three more runs in the fifth with the aid of two throwing errors by the Tigers.
Aaron Holland and Frank both singled to right in the first inning, Holland's a soft single and Frank's in front of a diving
Blake Pou, before another soft single by Sam Paden loaded the bases. Cooper Pease walked, forcing in a run, but Donald got a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning without further damage.
Dom McVay reached on a swinging bunt down the third base line to start the second inning for the Warhawks. Darryl Jackson and Matt Scolan both walked, loading the bases, and Frank's fly ball to deep center plated a run. Paden's soft single to left scored another for a 3-0 UWW advantage.
The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the second after a leadoff double down the leftfield line by Yarbro. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored on another, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Sewanee missed a chance to in the third inning when
Charlie Teel walked with one out and Herndon singled.
Jack Roode was hit with two outs, but Yarbro popped out to end the threat.
Whitewater added three more runs in the fifth with the aid of two Sewanee throwing errors.
Danny Hopper singled to left, the hardest hit ball of the game for the Warhawks. He stole second and moved to third when the throw got into centerfield. Andy Theis chopped a single up the middle, scoring a run, and McVay grounded a double down the leftfield line.
Yarbro's throw to second on the play got away, allowing Theis to come across, and a wild pitch scored McVay for a 6-1 UWW lead. The teams played five complete innings before the grounds crew and players from both clubs put the tarp on the field. Less than 15 minutes later the rain started, delaying the contest for almost three hours.
