Baseball posts two wins

Snell's squeeze secures second victory

PENSACOLA, Fla.Charlie Teel and Hunter Herndon each posted five hits, Teel scored five runs and Luke Bishop tossed six-plus innings, helping Sewanee win a pair of games, 5-2 and 11-10, extending the club's winning streak to four games in baseball action here Thursday at Wahoos Stadium.

In the opener, Teel posted two hits and scored twice and Bishop worked six-plus innings for the win, helping the Tigers (10-8) to a 5-2 victory over Wisconsin-Platteville.

Sewanee scored three times in the third inning and twice more in the fifth and Bishop and Will Berry made it hold up with great work on the mound, limiting UWP to six hits and issuing just three walks. Five different players drove in the five runs for the Tigers.

Bishop (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts, hitting one batter as well. The righthander retired the side in order in the first and fourth innings and worked around one baserunner in the third and sixth.

Berry got the save with three innings of scoreless relief, giving up two hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He entered the contest with runners on the corners and no one out in the seventh, allowing just one run to score, and induced a fly ball for the final out in the ninth with the tying run at the plate.

In the second game, Herndon was 4-for-5 with four runs scored while Teel, Jack Roode and Will Yarbro collected three hits apiece. Yarbro also drove in four runs.

Sewanee scored five runs in the seventh and led 10-5 headed to the ninth before Carroll plated five runs, two unearned, but Patty Baca blooped a double to start the bottom of the ninth and scored the game-winner on a squeeze bunt by Oliver Snell.

Jake Walling pitched 5.2 innings of relief for the Tigers and was in line for the win until the five-run ninth by Carroll. Walling gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits with no walks and one strikeout in relief of starter Ben Wesier.

Wisconsin-Platteville got on the board first when Mason Molitor was hit to leadoff the second inning and Grant Bossert walked. With one out Ian Merry singled to left, plating a run, but Jake Wegner was thrown out at third trying to take the extra base. Bishop worked out of the jam with a groundout, holding Platteville to one run in the inning.

Roode just missed a home run to leadoff the bottom of the second, with the wind knocking down a deep drive to right that was tracked down at the wall by Chris Tsouras.

The Tigers got on the board in the third when Mike Lewishall drew a leadoff walk and stole second and Jadon Fetrow singled with one out, plating Lewishall, and then also stole second. Teel followed with an RBI single up the middle, went to second on a balk and came across on a single to center from Herndon for a 3-1 Tigers lead.

In the fifth Fetrow was hit to start the inning and Teel followed with a single to right, but Fetrow was thrown out trying to steal third. Blake Pou doubled home a run and Herndon and Roode both walked, loading the bases. Yarbro's sacrifice fly stretched the advantage to 5-1.

UWP threatened in the sixth when Wyatt Molitor singled with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. Lewishall saved a run with a great diving play to his left, throwing out Mason Molitor at first to end the inning.

Wisconsin-Platteville plated a run in the seventh after Bossert led off with a double down the leftfield line, a grounder that was just inside the bag and got past a diving Teel. He went to third on a wild pitch and Jake Wegner walked, ending the day for Bishop.

Merry's sacrifice fly pushed across Bossert, but Berry struck out the next two hitters to end the inning with the Tigers still in front, 5-2.

Wyatt Molitor walked with one out in the eighth but Justin Fago bounced into an inning-ending 4-6-3 doubleplay.

Wisconsin-Platteville threatened in the ninth as well, with Bossert singling with one out and Merry bouncing a single into the six-hole with two outs. After a very close play at third on a wild pitch, pinch-hitter Blake Bussan flied out to right to end the game.

The Tigers started quickly in the second game with a one-out single by Teel in the first. He moved to second on a groundout and scored on a two-out single through the right side by Roode.

Carroll took the lead in the third after a leadoff single by Gabe Lee and a run-scoring triple to rightcenter from Leo Matuga. Joey Appino grounded to third but Teel's throw to the plate was low, allowing the run to score, and Appino went to second on a wild pitch. Casey Mir followed with an RBI single up the middle for a 3-1 Carroll advantage.

Sewanee answered quickly with two runs in the bottom of the frame, with four straight singles by Teel, Herndon, Roode and Yarbro producing two runs.

In the fifth Herndon led off with a double to rightcenter and scored on groundouts by Roode and Yarbro for a 4-3 Tigers edge.

Sewanee broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning, or so it seemed, starting with a one-out single by Teel, who stole second and scored on Herndon's base hit, a line drive that hit the mound and ricocheted by the second baseman into rightcenter. Roode walked and Yarbro and Pou drove in runs with consecutive RBI singles.

Lewishall's slow roller down the third base line went under the glove of Lane Scott and Yarbro scored on the play. J.T. Carter's line drive to left plated Pou with the last run of the inning for a 9-3 Tigers lead.

Carroll got two runs back in the eighth and it could have been more.

Appino reached on a throwing error to leadoff and Mir was hit before a single to right from Dalen Lamberson loaded the bases. Mason Hege was also hit, forcing in a run, and Lane Scott's sacrifice fly to leftcenter pushed across Mir. With two outs Eddie Synek lined into rightcenter, but Pou made a spectacular diving catch, saving two runs and keeping Sewanee in front, 9-5.

In the bottom of the inning Herndon and Roode both singled and Yarbro greeted reliever Roman Maguire with an RBI single to right.

In the ninth Matuga walked with one out and Appino was hit before Mir dumped a single into short center, loading the bases. Matuga scored on a wild pitch and Appino came across on an infield single deep into the six-hole by Lamberson.

Hege's short fly ball to right was dropped by Luke Thompson, loading the bases again, and Scott plated two runs with a single to rightcenter. Anthony Tado's sacrifice fly to center scored the tying run and Synek grounded out to end the inning.

Paca's bloop double started the bottom of the ninth and he went to third on a balk, as Carroll tried to run a pickoff play with the Tigers trying to bunt but Maguire flinched, causing the balk. Ethan Williams flied out to short right before the well-executed squeeze play by Snell ended the game.

Sewanee plays 25th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday at 4 p.m. and ends the weekend with a 10 a.m. contest Sunday versus Lyon College.
