Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's lacrosse falls in Durham to Skidmore

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Phelps Thomas and Niko Maheras both collected two goals, but the Tigers fell to Skidmore in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening in Durham, N.C. 

Sewanee collected two quick goals to start the game within just over a minute of each other from Charles Moran and Thomas. 

Skidmore tallied their first goal with 11:45 on the clock before Thomas equalized their goal with an assist from Moran for a 3-1 lead. However, the Thoroughbreds ended the first by recording three unanswered goals. 

Zach Crain evened the score at four a piece with a goal from the top of the circle off an assist from Payton Herleth. A failed clear from Skidmore led to a goal from Maheras with an assist from Manoli Loupassi to take the lead with 8:55 left in the first half. 

A caused turnover from Skidmore led to another goal, tying the score at five going into halftime with five a piece. 

Sewanee could not find the back of the net in the third as Skidmore registered three goals to Sewanee's none, taking an 8-5 lead going into the fourth period. 

Devon Root posted a quick goal to start the fourth with an assist from Corbet Dardin, but Skidmore collected three more unanswered goals to maintain their lead. 

Maheras cut Skidmore's lead to four with just under two minutes remaining, but Jon Byrne equalized Maheras's goal, scoring one of his own with 59 seconds on the clock to secure the win for the Thoroughbreds. 

Thomas collected three points, the most for Sewanee with two goals and an assist while Moran and Maheras both collected two. Moran's came from one goal and one assist while Maheras collected two goals. 

Defensively, Drew Perun was 14-of-22 from the face-off position, collecting 10 ground balls and one caused turnover, and posting one shot on goal. Jack Selner recorded four caused turnovers and one ground ball. Greg Ix, in the net for the Tigers, registered 10 saves on the night, his season-best. 

Sewanee opens conference play as they return home to face Oglethorpe on Sunday, March 17 at 3 p.m. CT.
