Jordan Theron and
Quinn Wicklund won in singles and doubles and Peyton Erkc added a singles victory, but 31
st-ranked Kenyon College posted a pair of doubles victories and won the final three completed singles matches in a 5-4 11
th-ranked Sewanee in men's tennis action Wednesday in Malibu, Calif.
Wicklund, Erck and Theron registered singles victories at Nos. 4, 2 and 1 in that order, all in straight sets, putting the Tigers (5-4) ahead in the match, 4-2, but the Owls (5-4) claimed the final three matches on the court, all in three sets.
Kenyon started with a pair of doubles wins, though Theron and Wicklund defeated Eric Zhang and Rishii Kondapaneni, 8-1, at No. 1 for the Tigers. Alejandro Gonzalez and Eliezer Gonzalez collected an 8-4 win at No. 2 versus
Gil Weston and
Talman Ramsey at No. 3 and Paulo Pacasandre and
Gianluca Bocanegra recorded an 8-6 victory over
Andre-Remi Jakobi and Erck at No. 2.
Sewanee responded with three decisive singles wins, with Wicklund defeating Bocanegra, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 before Theron posted a 6-4, 6-4, victory at No. 1 and Erck registering a 6-1, 6-2, triumph at No. 2.
Kenyon started its comeback at No 6, with Rakkan Audeh collecting a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, decision over
Henry Hyden. Alejandro Gonzalez defeated Ramsey, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 3, squaring the match at four apiece, and Eliezer Gonzalez posted the deciding point with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, win at No. 5 versus Weston.
Sewanee finishes the Spring Break trip Friday with a match against second-ranked Washington University at Azusa Pacific University.
