Seven-run ninth carries Tigers past UWP

Moll tossed 5.1 innings in start for first win

SEWANEE, Tenn.Ryan Moll tossed 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run, and Sebastian Leinberger and Will Yarbro each drove in three runs while Sewanee posted seven runs in the ninth to break open a close game in a 13-6 victory over Wisconsin-Platteville on Tuesday at Wahoos Stadium in Pensacola, Fla.

The Tigers (7-8) ended a four-game losing streak with the win, pounding out 13 hits in the win in the first of six games this week at the home of the Double-A Pensacola Wahoos.

Leinberger, Charlie Teel, Yarbro and Jadon Fetrow all collected two hits while Yarbro scored three times. Sewanee took advantage of eight walks by Pioneers pitchers. The Tigers plated single runs in the second, third, sixth and seventh innings and two runs in the fifth, taking a 6-3 lead into ninth before exploding for seven runs on seven hits.

Moll allowed seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 5.1 innings to get the win. UWP had baserunners in every inning, with a doubleplay erasing a leadoff single in the fifth and the Pioneers scoring via an error in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Yarbro hit a solo homer in the second inning to get the Tigers on the board, his first of the season. Luke Thompson led off with a walk in the third and after a fielder's choice, Leinberger stole second with two outs and scored on a single to left by Teel for a 2-0 Sewanee edge.

Slate Higa drew a leadoff walk for the UWP in the bottom of the inning and went to second on a balk. With two outs Wyatt Molitor's grounder was booted, allowing the run to score.

Grant Bossert doubled to start the Pioneers fourth inning and infield singles by Connor Gresens and Chris Tsouras loaded the bases. Spencer Robertson's sac fly tied the game at two, but Moll did well to escape the inning without further damage.

Thompson singled and Fetrow doubled to open the fifth for the Tigers and Leinberger followed with a two-run single, putting the Tigers back in front, 4-2.

In the sixth Yarbro walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by Mike Lewishall. Teel was hit with one out in the seventh and Hunter Herndon reached on an error before Jack Roode was hit, loading the bases. Yarbro's groundout plated a run for a 6-2 Sewanee advantage.

The Pioneers got a run back in the eighth after a leadoff single by Bossert, who moved to second on a bad pickoff throw. Tsouras then singled, plating the run, and an error and a bunt single loaded the bases, but Jake Walling induced an inning-ending doubleplay to keep the score, 6-3.

Sewanee sent 13 batters to the plate in the ninth, starting with a double by Herndon, who scored on an RBI single by Yarbro. Blake Pou walked and Lewishall was hit, loading the bases, and Jonah Patton walked, forcing in a run.

Fetrow then plated two runs with a double, though Patton was thrown out at third on the play. Leinberger drove in Fetrown with a single and Teel followed with a single before an RBI single by Herndon. Owen Andress plated the final run of the inning with an RBI double.

UWP scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, with a leadoff single by Justin Fago. Molitor was hit and the runners moved up on a grounder to first before Bossert belted a three-run homer, but that was all for the Pioneers.

Sewanee plays again Wednesday at 3 p.m. against the University of Chicago.
