A win over Toccoa Falls in the season opener collects first win for Burns as head coach

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Jack Roode hit a home run and Mike Lewishall doubled to right field with bases loaded, sending three in to collect an 11-8 win over Toccoa Falls in their home opener on Friday afternoon in Sewanee. The Tiger's win gives Nate Burns his first win as a head coach in their season opener.

Lewishall's double started the game for the Tigers as he drove in the first three runs of the season in the 2nd inning. The next at-bat, Owen Andress sent Lewishall home off a single to give Sewanee a 4-1 lead over Toccoa Falls.

Blake Pou's double down the infield line sent Jadon Fetrow home in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Roode posted the first two-run homer of the year, sending the Tigers' lead to six.

Pou found himself on base off a fielder's choice in the sixth as Hunter Herndon had a repeat of Pou's hit from the fourth inning, a double to left field to send Pou home this time with one out. Sewanee took advantage of an error from the Screaming Eagles, as Roode reached first and sent Herndon home for his third RBI of the night.

Toccoa Falls got back in the game in the 7th with a two-out double from Carter Smith and a triple from C. Clouatre to record three runs from the Screaming Eagles. However, in the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers answered off a triple from freshman Sebastian Leinberger, sending Andress home, and another RBI from Herndon brought Leinberger home.

The visitors ended the game with four unanswered runs, but the Tigers' early lead secured the home-opener win, 11-8.

Matt Munn registered the win at the mound for the Tigers as he struck out nine batters in 4.1 innings pitched.

Luke Bishop started at the mound for the Tigers and recorded three strikeouts pitching three innings. Freshman Will Berry and Childers Winn closed out the remaining innings for the Tigers.

The Tigers had five players with two hits and every player who had an at-bat, recorded at least one run. Lewishall led Sewanee in RBIs with three, and Herndon and Roode batted in two a piece.

Sewanee returns to the diamond for a double-header, weather permitting, to close out a three-game series at home tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Tigers host their second three-game series, next Saturday and Sunday, February 17 and 18 against Anderson University.
