SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Jadon Fetrow singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth and Sewanee scored four times over the last two innings, coming back for a 7-6 victory against Anderson University in the first of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at Montgomery Field.
The two teams conclude the series with a doubleheader Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Tigers (2-0) trailed 6-3 headed to the bottom of the eighth but plated three runs to knot the contest, with RBI doubles from
Luke Thompson and
Hunter Herndon and a run-scoring single by
Blake Pou.
In the ninth
Wilson Irvin and
Mike Lewishall both walked to start the inning and
Owen Andress was intentionally walked to load the bases. Fetrow then delivered an RBI single to right, completing the comeback for the home team.
Drew Noblet (1-0), the fourth Sewanee hurler, tossed five shutout innings of relief for the victory, allowing three hits and three hits with six strikeouts. The senior righthander worked around baserunners in every inning, including two walks in the fifth and a hit by pitch and a single in the eighth.
Noah Wathen pitched four shutout innings of relief for the Ravens before Sewanee finally touched Logan Nickel for three runs in the eighth. Dalton Wasson (0-1) walked the first three hitters of the ninth to take the loss for Anderson.
The Ravens struck for four runs in the second inning, starting with singles from Trey Dorton and Griffin Wolf before a walk to Wasson. Jed Downham's free pass forced in a run and Cooper Webb followed with a two-run single to rightcenter. A slow roller between home and first by Charlie Jones pushed across another run for Anderson.
Sewanee answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, with a walk by Irvin starting the inning and he moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Lewishall followed with a free pass and both runners moved up via a wild pitch.
Andress' ground ball to first plated a run and a slow roller to the left side by Fetrow turned into an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Dorton led off with a double in the third for the Ravens and scored on groundouts by Wolf and Wasson.
Will Yarbro singled to center with one out in the bottom of the inning for the Tigers and stole second. Irvin followed with a walk and a grounder by Lewishall moved the runners to second and third. Yarbro made a good read on a pitch that got away from the catcher, coming across to make it 5-3.
Anderson added to its lead in the fourth, starting with a leadoff single by Tyler Smitherman and Justin Reed followed with a soft single to right. Wolf then walked to load the bases and Smitherman scored on a balk.
The Tigers missed a chance in the seventh after a leadoff walk by Pou and an infield single from Herndon, but Yarbro bounced sharply into a 4-6-3 doubleplay. Irvin walked and stole second, but Lewishall struck out to end the threat.
