Strong second half sends women's lacrosse past Alma, 16-7

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sally Herrington collected six goals as the Sewanee defeated Alma in women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Puett Field, 16-7 

Herrington's six goals came off nine shots. She also recorded two ground balls, two draw-control wins, and one caused turnover. Three of the Tigers' athletes were tied with four points a piece. Raleigh Cooper and Erika Bolcar both posted three goals and an assist, and Caroline Harlick picked up four assists. 

Defensively, Claire Dillard led Sewanee with six ground balls, five caused turnovers, and five draw controls. Dillard also produced a goal and an assist. In goal for the Tigers, Lilly Jordan recorded nine saves. 

Alma came out to a quick start as they tallied two back-to-back goals just two and a half minutes into the game. Herrington had an answer for the Tigers as Elizabeth Muller connected with Herrington for the first Tiger goal. 

The Scots connected on another goal off the draw control, but Herrington recorded another for the Tigers off the draw with an assist from Dillard. 

Herrington recorded a hat trick, tallying the Tigers' third goal of a free position shot to tie the score at three.  

Bolcar collected her first collegiate goal to give Sewanee their first lead of the day. Bolcar's goal resulted from a caused turnover from Dillard and an assist from Alexa Berg

Alma tallied a last-minute-man-up goal to end the period tied at four. 

Bolcar came out strong in the second quarter as she registered her second goal of the day just over two and a half minutes into the period. Dillard tallied the only other goal of the first half on a man-up opportunity for Sewanee to go into half-time with a two-goal lead. 

Brooke Sigmon found the back of the net for the Tigers' first goal of the second half from a Scot turnover, but the Scots answered quickly with a man-up goal of their own. 

Another goal from Herrington sent the Tigers' on a three-goal run in just over three and a half minutes. Morgan Boylan and Bolcar collected the Tiger's other goals, Harlick recorded two of the assists and Bolcar picked up the other. 

Alma registered their second goal of the half to cut Sewanee's lead to four. However, a caused turnover by Sigmond led to a Sewanee possession where Harlick connected with Cooper for a Sewanee goal. The Scots tallied a last-second goal to end the third period. 

The Tigers held the Scots scoreless in the fourth as they tallied five of their own. Cooper started by recording back-to-back goals, the first from an assist by Harlick, and the second came off a caused turnover from Dillard. 

Herrington posted the next two for Sewanee for her fifth and sixth goals of the game. Boylan recorded the last goal of the game from a man-up opportunity with an assist from Cooper for a 16-7 win. 

Sewanee travels to Kentucky this weekend to face Transylvania on Saturday and Spalding on Sunday before returning home to play four games in five days on March 6 through the 10th.
