LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Niko Maheras tallied the game-winning goal for Sewanee in overtime in men's lacrosse action against Carthage in Louisville, Ky. on Sunday afternoon. Sewanee moves to 5-0 for the first time in program history.

Devon Root scored the game-tying goal with 35 seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime. The Tigers killed a one-minute man-up opportunity by Carthage and a caused turnover from Jack Selner led to the game winning goal from Maheras.

Sewanee scored five goals in the second half and held Carthage to only two for a second-half comeback.

Root collected the first goal of the second half off an assist from Corbet from a failed clear attempt by Carthage.

The Firebirds tacked on another goal just under 12 minutes in the third period to gain a four goal lead.

However, the Tigers collected 3 unanswered goals from Maheras, Carter Cole, and Griffin Peterson in just over a three and a half minute span.

Carthage gained a two-man up opportunity at the end of the third that carried over into the fourth and the Firebirds capitalized for a 9-7 lead.

A caused turnover from Cam Thornton and a ground ball pickup from Will Kennedy led to a Tiger goal from Phelps Thomas for a one goal game.

The Tigers got out to a fast start. Collecting two back to back goals within less than a minute of each other. Root recorded the first goal for Sewanee with a pass from Maheras. Drew Perun won the faceoff and Corbet Darden capitalized for Sewanee with an assist from Zach Crain for a two goal lead.

However, Carthage registered six unanswered goals, three in the first period, and three to start the second period.

Charles Moran broke the streak for Sewanee to cut Carthage's lead to half, but Ben Krok tallied another goal for the Firebirds to go into halftime up 7-3.

Jack Selner led the Tigers in caused turnovers, registering 5 and Jake Cohen collected three. Preun again led Sewanee in ground balls with 10. Cohen was right behind with nine, Selner posted five, and Joe Orem tallied four.
