Women's Lacrosse defeats Piedmont in their home opener, 17-13

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Emma Burns collected nine points off of five goals and four assists, and Sally Herrington recorded four goals as the Sewanee beat Piedmont in their home opener on Saturday afternoon at Puett Field.  

Herrington collected five ground balls and won 10 draw controls and Price recorded seven draw controls and had a goal and an assist. Claire Dillard and Brooke Sigmon both tallied three goals, Dillard registered four caused-turnovers and Elizabeth Muller posted two assists. 

The Tigers opened the season with a draw-control win and a ground ball from Herrington, followed by a goal from Herrington off an assist from Emma Burns just 59 seconds in. 

Piedmont evened the score with a man-up goal in under 13 minutes, but Emma Burns answered to put the Tigers back up with an unassisted goal from a caused turnover by Herrington. Burns then put Sewanee up by two off another Piedmont turnover. 

A caused turnover by Piedmont led to a goal by Laura Crone, but Claire Dillard recorded her first goal as a Tiger just 11 seconds later. Raleigh Cooper assisted Dillard's man-up goal. A draw-control win by Herrington led to a goal 10 seconds later from Brooke Sigmon for a 5-2 Sewanee lead. 

Herrington connected on another goal with an assist from Marlin Price with 42 seconds left in the first, but Piedmont tallied on a last-second goal off a free-position shot. 

Price won the draw control to begin the second period leading to another man-up goal from Dillard with an assist from Burns. 

Another caused turnover from Herrington led to another goal by Saverino with an assist from Burns with just under 12 minutes on the clock. 

The Lions tallied their fifth goal, but Price possessed the draw which led to Sigmon's second goal. Piedmont collected another quick goal 27 seconds later to get within four goals. 

Herrington collected a last-second goal for the Tigers off an assist from Elizabeth Muller to send Sewanee into halftime up, 10-5. 

The Lions took the first game of the second half, but Sewanee tallied the next four goals in the next 4:08 minutes from Herrington, Dillard, Sigmon, and Price. Piedmont went on a quick three-goal run of their own with a man-up goal and two goals from Ava Trankina. 

Burns connected on a free possession shot with 1:59 left, but Piedmont collected a last man-up goal to get within 10. 

Piedmont collected three of the four goals in the fourth period, but the Tiger's lead secured the win. Burns tallied a final man-up goal for Sewanee's lone goal in the fourth quarter. 

Sewanee plays again at home against Alma on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before traveling to Lexington, Ky. to face Transylvania and Spalding on March 2 and 3rd.
