Sewanee outlasts Illinois Wesleyan in Louisville, 13-12

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Zach Crain collected three goals and four assists for seven points, and four Tigers had two goals as Sewanee beat Illinois Wesleyan by one, 13-12 in Louisville, Ky. at Spalding University. 

The Titans had an early start as they scored two goals in just under three minutes. Devon Root tallied the Tigers' first goal, but Illinois Wesleyan tacked on another goal a minute later. Hawkins Schnabel connected on a man-up goal with an assist from Crain and Sage Cookerly evened the score at three just minutes later. 

Charles Moran tallied another man-up goal but the Titans responded with a man-up goal of themselves. 

Crain connected on two back-to-back goals with back-to-back assists from Moran. IWU brought the game back within one, but a goal from Cookerly with 32 seconds on the clock sent the Tigers into the second period up by two. 

IWU came out in the second period strong as they tallied five unanswered goals, four of which came with a man-up. 

Corbet Darden tallied the Tigers' lone goal in the second to get Sewanee back within two going into halftime. 

The third period only saw three goals, two from Sewanee. Both of the Tigers' goals came with a man-up advantage with assists from Crain, Schnabel collected the first and Root posted the second. 

Crain started the fourth tallying his third goal with an assist from Manoli Loupassi to tie the game at 11 a piece. The Titans scored a goal to go back up by one with just over 11 minutes left in the game. 

A caused turnover from Loupassi led to a goal by Darden to tie the game back at 12. 

Sewanee secured the go-ahead goal as Root started Sewanee's possession with a caused turnover which led to a goal from Niko Maheras

Drew Perun was 11-of-20 from the faceoff and Asa Nischwitz was 4-of-5. Perun led the Tigers in ground balls with seven and posted one shot that ricocheted off the post. Alec Jazaeri followed with five ground balls, two shots, and one caused turnover. Crain and Moran both collected four ground balls apiece. 

Root, Darden, Schnabel, and Cookerly all had two goals while Moran and Maheras collected one apiece. Moran also tallied two assists for three points. 

The Tigers play again tomorrow at Spalding University against Carthage College at 1 p.m. ET and Noon CT.
