SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Jack Roode and
Wilson Irvin each posted three RBIs and Sewanee scored multiple runs in four innings en route to a 14-1 victory in eight innings over Vermont State-Castleton in baseball action Saturday in Montgomery, Ala.
The Tigers (5-3) look to sweep the weekend with a 4 p.m. contest Sunday against host Huntingdon College.
Irvin belted a three-run homer in the sixth that started the onslaught in the final three innings. Sewanee plated two runs in the seventh thanks to four walks in the inning and
Ethan Williams capped the scoring with a two-run double in the eighth.
Matt Munn (2-0) tossed four scoreless innings of relief for the victory, walking one and striking out four. Sewanee starter
Luke Bishop worked three innings, allowing one run on two hits with two walks.
The Tigers touched Castleton starter Sam Crawford for five runs on four hits in 5.2 innings, though the righthander struck out eight. Three Spartans relievers gave up nine runs on six hits with five walks.
Sewanee got on the board with an unearned run in the first when
Hunter Herndon singled to center with two outs and stole second. Roode reached on an error by Crawford, with Herndon scoring on the play.
Jared Cafasso and Trey LaVigne each walked to start the third inning for Castleton and the runners moved up on a passed ball. Kannon Dush's sacrifice fly pushed the run across, but Bishop got a pop out and a groundout to get out of the inning without further damage.
In the fourth
Will Yarbro led off with a triple and
Mike Lewishall was hit.
J.T. Carter's groundout plated the run and Lewishall went to second on the play, third on a fly ball to right by Irvin and scored on a wild pitch.
Yarbro and Carter both walked in the sixth and with two outs, Irvin greeted Castleton reliever Aubrey Ramey with a three-run homer, extending the Tiger lead to 6-1.
In the seventh
Charlie Teel,
Blake Pou and Herndon all walked to leadoff the frame and Roode's sacrifice fly plated Teel. Lewishall was hit with one out and Carter drew another free pass, forcing in a run for an 8-1 Sewanee advantage.
Teel singled with one out in the eighth and Pou walked before three straight RBI singles from Herndon, Roode and Yarbro. Lewishall was hit again and a run scored on a wild pitch. Williams followed with a two-run double for the 14-1 lead.
