Game Recap: Baseball |

Pou, Roode each post two hits in 7-6 baseball win

SEWANEE, Tenn.Blake Pou doubled and homered, Jack Roode posted two hits and one RBI and Sewanee scored three times in the bottom of the eighth in a 7-6 victory over Mt. St. Joseph on Friday in Montgomery, Ala.

The Tigers (3-2) plated three runs in the eighth on just one hit, an RBI single by Roode, with the second run scoring on a fielder's choice and the go-ahead run on a doubleplay. Six Sewanee pitchers allowed nine hits and nine walks but also struck out nine in the win, including 4.1 innings from starter Jake Nevle, who gave up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Mt. St. Joseph plated a run in the top of the eighth for a 6-4 lead, but the Tigers answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Pou and Hunter Herndon both walked to leadoff the frame and advanced to second and third on a balk. Roode's line-drive single to left was just out of the reach of a diving shortstop, allowing one run to score, and Herndon beat the throw to the plate on a ground ball by Will Yarbro, tying the game at six.

Pinch-hitter Jake Glover also walked, loading the bases, and Owen Andress grounded into a doubleplay but Roode came across with the go-ahead run.

In the ninth reliever Jake Walling (1-0) walked Kevin Schaaf to start the inning before getting a fly out and then allowing a single to left by Jackson Gutzwille, who homered earlier in the contest. Jordan Harley flied to left against Childers Winn and Yarbro's throw to third was in plenty of time to nail Schaaf tagging up, ending the game.

Winn got the save with two-thirds of an inning while Walling also pitched two-thirds of an inning, getting the final out in the eighth.

Derek Richter worked four innings in the start the Mt. St. Joseph (0-1), giving up three runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Ryan Caulfield (0-1), allowing two runs on three hits without getting an out.

The Tigers started quickly, with a leadoff single to right by Charlie Teel followed by a two-run homer by Pou in the bottom of the first. Herndon followed with a double to rightcenter and Roode singled to left, putting runners on the corners. With two outs Sewanee executed a double steal, with Herndon scoring before Roode was tagged out to end the inning, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

The Lions got two runs back in the fourth with a leadoff infield single by Matt Brankamp and a two-run homer from Gutzwille. After another single and hit by pitch, Ben Weiser came on to get the final two outs of the inning and preserve a one-run lead.

Sewanee tacked on a run in the fifth when Mike Lewishall walked, went to second and third on wild pitches and came across on a sacrifice fly from Teel.

But Mt. St. Joseph responded again in the sixth, with a leadoff walk to Andrew Clements, who moved to second on a pass ball and third on a beautiful bunt down the third base line from Schaaf that turned into a hit.

Bramkamp's sac fly cut the Tigers lead to 4-3 and after walks to Gutzwille and Jake Sanders, Anton Mere dumped a single into short right, plating a run to tie the game. Another free pass forced in a run, giving the Lions a 5-4 edge.

Mt. St. Joseph added an insurance run in the eighth after a leadoff walk to Mere, who took second when the Tigers botched a pickoff attempt and went to third on a groundout by Ethan Mason and scored on a two-out single from Brennan Martin.

Sewanee plays Vermont State-Castleton on Saturday at Noon and ends the road trip with a 4 p.m. contest Sunday against host Huntingdon College.
