Sewanee moves 3-0 on the season with a 19-7 win over LaGrange

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Phelps Thomas scored three goals as the Tigers stunned LaGrange in the final game of the Music City Classic, 19-7, on Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn. 

Thomas led the Tigers with three points for the day with his three goals as the Sewanee had seven players tied with two points a piece. Thomas collected his three goals on four shots and added a caused turnover. Tanner Furyk collected two caused turnovers and two ground balls. 

Drew Perun was 9-of-10 at faceoff with five ground balls, Asa Nischwitz was 9-of-12 with two goals and six ground balls, and Clay Upchurch was 4-of-7.  

Three Sewanee goalkeepers saw the field. Flynn Bowman started for the Tigers and recorded three saves, C.J. Mezzatesta posted four saves, and Stutts Everette collected three. 

Devon Root opened the game for the Tigers with a goal just 31 seconds in as Drew Perun won the opening face-off giving the Tigers possession. 

Two back-to-back goals from Hudson Gregory and Sage Cookerly at 11:05 and 10:18 got the Tigers to a quick start. Carter Cole tallied another for Sewanee off an assist by Mac Elliott forcing a LaGrange timeout. 

LaGrange got on the scoreboard with just over seven minutes on the clock by Luke Young. However, Hawkins Schnabel brought the Tigers' lead to four as he connected on his first goal of the season. 

A caused turnover from the Panthers created an opportunity as Ryan Comeau found the back of the net off of a save from Sewanee's Bowman. 

Niko Maheras connected with Phelps Thomas to start the second. Drew Perun won the faceoff, resulting in five shots from the Tigers, but Lucas Webb, in goal for the Panthers collected three saves, and gained possession for the Panthers, resulting in a LaGrange goal. 

A caused turnover from Manoli Loupassi led to another Sewanee goal, as Devon Root added for Sewanee. 

Alec Jazaeri caused a turnover that led to a Sewanee goal from Zach Crain, just a minute and thirty seconds later. 

Sewanee tallied another two goals this time from freshman Hank Walsh and Henry Westfall within a minute of each other for Sewanee to go into halftime, 10-3.

Asa Nischwitz opened the second half, winning the face-off, and scoring his first collegiate goal. 

Tanner Furyk caused a turnover for Sewanee, leading to another Loupassi goal, however Luke Young of LaGrange had a quick answer as he tallied another for the Panthers. Another quick goal from Thomas got the Tigers back up by nine with his second goal of the day. 

Crain connected with Moran for another Sewanee goal, but LaGrange connected with another goal after gaining possession from the faceoff. 

JM DuPree connected again for Sewanee off a failed clear attempt by LaGrange. 

Just under two minutes into the final quarter, Cookerly collected his second goal and less than two minutes later Woods McCormick registered a goal with an assist from Westfall. 
Sewanee capitalized on an extra-man opportunity as Thomas tallied the man-up goal.  

A timeout called by Sewanee resulted in a goalie change as freshman Stutts Everett entered the game. Everett saved three back-to-back shots from the Panthers, but Ryan Comeau from LaGrange finally sent one in. 

Nischwitz collected his second faceoff win resulting in a goal for the day with 1:37 on the clock, but LaGrange tallied the final goal of the Music City Classic with just over a minute on the clock from Comeau for a final score of Sewanee 19, LaGrange, 7. 

Sewanee travels to Louisville, Ky. next weekend as they face Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage College on Saturday and Sunday, before returning home the next weekend to face the Piedmont Lions.
