SEWANNE, Tenn. –
Russ Marr netted 31 points on just 18 shots and Sewanee put together a 30-10 run in the second half, running away for a 91-72 victory over LaGrange College in men's basketball action here Tuesday night at Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers (4-4) led by 10 at the half and the advantage remained 10 after a
Reid Carrier 3-pointer with 13:20 remaining in the game, but the Panthers (2-5) responded with seven straight points, including two baskets by Parker Gonzalez and an old-fashioned 3-point play from Jace Herrell.
Sewanee answered with eight straight points, starting with two free throws by
Tre Corrigan before 3-pointers by Corrigan and
Fletcher Bigham pushed the lead back to 11. That started a bigger 30-10 spurt over the next seven-plus minutes.
The game turned at the 8:48 mark when Marr drove for a layup and was fouled. LaGrange head coach Kendal Wallace drew a technical, after multiple warnings, and Marr made both technical shots plus his free throw from the foul for a five-point play. Bigham's layup after a turnover by the Panthers pushed the lead to 74-59 with eight minutes to play.
Marr added another basket and Corrigan made his fourth 3-pointer of the game. Carrier followed with a triple and Marr put an exclamation point on the victory with a breakaway dunk and an 89-66 advantage with just under four minutes on the clock.
Marr made 11-of-18 shots overall with a pair of 3-pointers and 7-for-8 at the foul line. Corrigan and Carrier combined for 30 points and 8-of-14 shooting from behind the arc, with Corrigan netting 16 and six assists.
Luka Avaliani and Bigham each netted 11 points for the Tigers.
Kameron McCall led four Panthers in double figures with 14 points, followed by Samuel Moss with 11 points and Brodie Scott and Trenton Dillard with 10 apiece. Scott posted a game-high 10 rebounds while
Graham Smith led Sewanee with nine boards.
Sewanee registered a 9-2 run three minutes into the contest, starting with a basket by Corrigan and two free throws from Marr. Bigham added a layup before a 3-pointer by Marr put the Tigers in front, 11-7.
Carrier's triple increased the lead to 22-16 and the advantage stayed between three and six until a layup from Avaliani pushed the lead to 29-22 with eight minutes left in the half. Baskets by LaGrange's Devin Dowell and Dillard cut the lead to three, but Corrigan answered with his first triple of the half.
Corrigan added another 3-pointer and Marr made a layup for a 37-28 advantage with four minutes remaining in the period. Moss made two foul shots and McCall collected a field goal for the Panthers, cutting the lead to five, but Avaliani netted a bucket underneath and after a scramble from one end to the other, Marr connected on a triple in the corner just before the halftime buzzer for a 42-32 Sewanee lead at the break.
Marr posted 16 points in the period and Corrigan and Carrier each netted eight for the Tigers while Moss led LaGrange with 10 points and McCall added eight.
Sewanee travels to Covenant College next Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. CT tip-off against the Scots, the team's final game before Christmas.
