SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Grace Gavin made five 3-pointers and posted 17 points, all in the first half, and Sewanee outscored Huntingdon College, 52-23, combined in the second and third quarters en route to an 81-61 win in women's basketball action here Sunday in the Sewanee Classic at Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers (6-6) broke out of a shooting slump, especially from behind the arc, hitting 10-of-25 attempts, including five from Gavin and three by
Brianna Keating-Rendon. Gavin's triples kept her team in the game in the first quarter and she added three more in the second period, part of a 13-2 run to end the half after the Hawks tied the contest at 29 with 4:12 remaining.
Gavin netted a 3-pointer to start the 13-2 spurt and
Cydney Wright's steal led to a layup by
Zoe Sedo before another triple by Gavin and then a layup from
Faith Humphrey. Gavin's third three of the run extended the lead to 42-31 at intermission.
Sewanee put together a 19-2 run over a six-minute stretch of the third quarter that put the game away. Kinstin Davis converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to pull Huntingdon within 49-38 with 7:12 left in the period.
Olivia Falvey made a layup and was fouled on the next offensive possession, making 1-of-2 at the foul line. She grabbed her own rebound and added another layup before a basket from
Kayla Northrup.
Charity Shaw netted two foul shots for the Hawks only points during the run at the 4:44 mark, but Wright answered with a field goal and Keating-Rendon posted a 3-pointer, then a layup and another triple. Falvey's putback stretched the lead to 68-40 with 1:42 left in the quarter.
Falvey finished with 15 points and she and Humphrey each grabbed eight rebounds. Keating-Rendon and Wright both recorded 12 points for the Tigers, who shot 21-of-37 from the field combined in the second and third periods.
Briana McGruder paced the Hawks with 11 points, Davis netted 10 and Deshauna Foote collected nine.
Huntingdon started the game quickly, with Davis and McGruder each posting baskets and Foote hitting a 3-pointer. Another Davis field goal gave the Hawks a 9-2 advantage just over three minutes into the game.
Gavin's first basket of the game cut the deficit to five and the freshman registered her first 3-pointer of the contest on the next offensive trip. Northrup's layup cut the deficit to four, but Davis answered with another three for the Hawks.
Sewanee ended the quarter on a 10-2 run, starting with another 3-pointer by Gavin. Wright posted an old-fashioned 3-point play and Keating-Rendon made the first of her three triples before Humphrey netted 1-of-2 at the foul line in the final second for a 19-18 edge at the end of 10 minutes.
