SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Russ Marr netted 28 points and
Fletcher Bigham posted 17 points and 11 rebounds, helping Sewanee pull away in the second half in a 94-60 victory over William Peace Sunday in men's basketball action in the Springhill Suites Guilford College Men's Holiday Classic in Greensboro, N.C.
The Tigers (6-5) rushed out to a 21-8 lead in the first six-plus minutes of the game thanks to five 3-pointers by five different players. Baskets by
Tre Corrigan and
Ben Folk extended the advantage to 27-10, but the Pacers answered with a 12-2 spurt over the next four minutes.
Shawn Jones recorded a basket and then a 3-pointer before two free throws from Parker Hodgson. Elijah Cathcart's old-fashioned 3-point play and two foul shots by Michael Dulin cut the Sewanee lead to 29-22 with 7:26 before the half.
Marr and
Luka Avaliani answered with field goals for the Tigers, but Dulin hit a pair of 3-pointers for William Peace, making it a seven-point game. The Pacers got as close as six with one free throw from Cathcart before the Tigers put together a 7-0 spurt behind two foul shots by Marr, a basket from
Eli Holland and then an old-fashioned 3-point play by Marr.
Avaliani's basket in the final minute gave Sewanee a 44-33 lead at intermission, with Marr posting 12 points and Avaliani chipping in eight. Dulin collected 18 points for lead the Pacers, making 4-of-8 from behind the arc.
Avaliani, Marr, Corrigan and
Graham Smith all scored in an 8-0 run early in the second half, pushing the advantage to 56-38. William Peace hung around thanks to a pair of triples by Tyler Whitehurst, but the Tigers posted a 15-2 spurt over the next four minutes to put the game away.
Eli Holland netted four points during the stretch and Marr collected back-to-back old-fashioned 3-point plays before a 3-pointer from
Reid Carrier and another basket by Marr stretched the lead to 74-48 with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
Avaliani finished with 13 points, Corrigan netted nine and Holland and Folk both chipped in eight. The Tigers outscored William Peace, 54-14, in the paint and won the battle on the boards, 46-32.
Sewanee takes on Greensboro College on Thursday at 3 p.m. CT in Greensboro and returns home Tuesday, Jan. 7, taking on Piedmont University at 6 p.m.
