SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Olivia Falvey netted 18 points and
Cydney Wright added 17 points and eight rebounds, but Jordan Coon posted 24 points and Franklin College used a 12-3 run in the second half to break open a close game in a 71-62 win over Sewanee in women's basketball action here Sunday in the Sewanee Classic at Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers (5-6) take on Huntingdon College at 2 p.m. on Monday in the final game of the Sewanee Classic.
Sewanee trailed by eight at the end of one quarter but tied the contest late in the second period. The Tigers tied the game four times in the third quarter, the last on at 45 on a Wright layup with 2:11 to play. Wright's basket in the final 45 seconds of the period made it 49-48 Grizzlies (8-2).
Sewanee was ice cold to start the final quarter, missing its first five shots and committing a pair of turnovers before
Faith Humphrey's field goal with 5:30 remaining in the contest finally got the Tigers on the board.
Coon netted 10 points in the deciding 12-3 spurt, making one of her seven 3-pointers in the game late in the third period and adding another early in the fourth as well as a pair of jumpers. The last two-pointer gave Franklin a 61-49 lead with just under six minutes to play. The Tigers got the lead under 10 points only in the final 15 seconds.
Coon posted 22 of her 27 points in the first half, connecting on 8-of-11 shooting overall, 6-for-9 from behind the arc, while the rest of the Franklin team made only 1-of-9 from 3-point range. Taylor Cooney collected 13 points and 10 rebounds and Payton Seay recorded 10 points and nine boards off the bench for the Grizzlies.
Wright registered five assists and five steals to go with her 17 points and eight boards. The Tigers netted 29 points off 24 Franklin turnovers but the team shot just 10-of-33 in the second half, 5-for-18 in the final period, leading to too many empty trips.
Falvey's 3-pointer got the Tigers on the board and Wright's layup tied the game at five before the Grizzlies scored 10 of the next 12 points in the opening period, with only a Wright putback over the next six minutes for Sewanee.
Coon made her second of six 3-pointers in the half to open the 10-2 spurt and Brooke Grimstead added another triple for Franklin. Erica Buening and Seay each connected on two foul shots for a 15-7 Grizzlies advantage.
Kayla Northrup's fastbreak layup and a triple by
Hannah Cleveland for Sewanee cut the deficit to 17-13 at the end of one quarter.
Northup posted a steal and layup to start the period for the Tigers but Coon answered with a pair of 3-pointers for the Grizzlies. Falvey and
Lilly Phillips each made triples for Sewanee as well and Phillips connected on another three to make it a one-point game with six minutes remaining until the break.
Coon registered yet another 3-pointer and two foul shots by Cooney pushed the Franklin edge back to four, but a steal and layup by Northrup and two free throws from
Grace Gavin tied the game at 30 late in the quarter.
Northrup's layup after a steal by Wright gave Sewanee its first lead since the first three minutes of the contest, but Coon netted her sixth triple of the half and Briley Munchel made a 15-footer in the final minute for a 35-32 Grizzlies advantage at intermission.
Falvey's old-fashioned 3-point play started the third quarter and she made 2-of-3 at the foul line after being fouled on a triple attempt at the end of the shot clock.
Zoe Sedo netted a 3-pointer for the Tigers and consecutive baskets by Wright knotted the game at 43 and 45, setting up the end of the third quarter and the scoring drought by the home team.
