Russ Marr collected 19 points but Sewanee made only 6-of-25 from 3-point range and Guilford College used 15-3 and 11-1 runs in the final 10 minutes of the first half to pull away and never looked back in a 90-68 victory over the Tigers in men's basketball action Sunday in the Springhill Suites Guilford College Men's Holiday Classic
Sewanee (5-5) faces William Peace at 1 p.m. CT on Monday to conclude the event and takes on Greensboro College on Thursday at 3 p.m. CT.
Marr and
Reid Carrier each netted six points in the opening 10 minutes of the game and the contest was tied at 19 midway through the period. The Quakers (8-2) put together a 15-3 run for a 34-22 advantage before Sewanee answered with an 8-5 mini-run, closing the gap to nine with 2:40 remaining in the period.
Guilford then scored 11 of the next 12 points to take a commanding 50-31 lead to halftime. The Quakers turned 10 offensive rebounds into 13 second-chance points in the opening 20 minutes.
Caleb Furr and Bobby Samples both made 3-pointers to start the second half for Guilford, pushing the advantage to 27 for the home team. Carrier's triple as well as a layup by Luke Avaliani, two free throws from Marr and a putback by
Fletcher Bigham were part of a 9-0 spurt by the Tigers, pulling within 72-54 with 8:32 to play, but that was as close as Sewanee would get.
Furr led five Guilford players in double figures with 17 points, followed by Gabe Proctor with 16. Chase Ellis and Dawson Edwards each netted 11 and Nick Farrar added 10. Proctor paced all players with 15 rebounds as well.
Four different players scored for Sewanee in the first three minutes of the game for an early 9-4 advantage, but 3-pointers by Edwards and Proctor quickly put the Quakers in front, 10-9. Carrier hit a pair of triples for the Tigers and Marr added two layups, tying the game at 19 midway through the period.
Farrar started a 15-3 run with an old-fashioned 3-point play and he and Samples each netted five points during the stretch, which was capped by a 3-pointer from Proctor for a 34-22 Guilford advantage. Sewanee was 1-for-6 from the field with one turnover during the run.
The Tigers cut the deficit to nine with 2:40 left in the half thanks to baskets from Avaliani and
Darryl Williams and two free throws apiece by Marr and
Graham Smith, but the club missed its last four shots and committed another turnover before intermission.
The Quakers posted 11 of the last 12 points of the period, including another three from Proctor and layups by Ellis, Kody Clayton and Caleb Farrish for a 50-31 Guilford lead at intermission.
