Tigers rally to stun Maryville in last-second victory

SEWANEE, Tenn. –  Olivia Falvey scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, while Cydney Wright added six as the Tigers pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Maryville, 68-66, on Monday night.

Wright sealed the win with two clutch free throws with just 1.6 seconds left, capping a furious 15-1 run over the final three and a half minutes. The Tigers overcame a 22-point deficit in the third quarter to secure the victory.

Falvey led Sewanee with 18 points, while Hannah Cleveland followed with 14 and Wright tallied 11. Wright also grabbed eight rebounds, and Cleveland added seven boards. Zoe Sedo contributed three steals, with Brianna Keating-Rendon and Faith Humphrey each adding one.

The Tigers posted 29 points off the bench, 20 points off turnovers, and 17 second-chance points.

Sewanee trailed 15-7 with just over three minutes remaining in the opening period but responded with a 13-4 run to take a 20-19 lead into the second quarter. The rally was fueled by three-pointers, two from Keating-Rendon, and one from Wright. Both teams scored seven points off turnovers in the opening frame.

Maryville opened the second period with a layup, sparking a defensive battle that saw Sewanee go scoreless for the first four and a half minutes. Humphrey finally broke the drought with a driving layup, the Tigers' only basket from the floor of the quarter. Sewanee's only other points in the third came from the free throw line, and Maryville took a 34-26 lead into halftime.

The Scots extended their lead with a 13-0 run to open the second half, building a 21-point advantage. The Tigers managed just six points in the first seven minutes of the third quarter but found momentum late in the period. A 12-4 run, led by seven points from Cleveland, cut Maryville's lead heading into the final frame.

Sewanee opened the fourth quarter with three-pointers from Falvey and Cleveland, continuing the momentum from late in the third. The Tigers outscored Maryville 28-12 in the final period, fueled by defensive stops and key free throws.

Falvey sank two free throws to bring Sewanee within seven points with two minutes remaining. The Tigers forced a turnover, but a missed opportunity on their next possession kept the game close. After Maryville hit one free throw, Wright responded with two of her own to trim the deficit to six.

With under a minute remaining, Falvey hit a second-chance jumper to make it a four-point game. Moments later, Sedo's steal set up Humphrey for a fast-break layup, cutting the deficit to two with 37 seconds left. Cleveland then drew a charge, giving Sewanee possession. Wright tied the game with a basket under the hoop, and another Maryville turnover gave Sewanee one last chance.

With 1.6 seconds on the clock, Wright drew a foul on the inbound and calmly sank both free throws to give Sewanee a two-point lead. Maryville's attempt at a buzzer-beater three fell short, sealing the Tigers' victory.
Sewanee forced six turnovers in the fourth quarter, converting them into six points. The Scotts were just 8-of-12 from the charity stripe in the fourth and just 14-of-12 for the day.

The Tigers' victory marks their third straight win, the first three-game win streak since 2020. Sewanee will look to build on their momentum as they travel to Belhaven on Saturday, Dec. 7 before taking on another Division I school in an exhibition on Sunday against Georgia State.
