Fourth-quarter sends Belhaven past Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Brianna Keating-Rendon tallied five threes and Olivia Falvey collected 17 points, however, a decisive fourth-quarter surge sent Belhaven past Sewanee in women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon. 

Keating-Rendon came off the bench to score 15 points, hitting five three-pointers, while adding two rebounds and a steal. Falvey tallied a team-high 17 points and chipped in two rebounds. Zoe Sedo contributed 12 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals, while both Cydney Wright and Grace Gavin added 11 points apiece. Wright also recorded seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals, and Gavin added three rebounds and one assist. Hannah Cleveland led Sewanee with 10 rebounds.

Belhaven opened with an 11-3 run, limiting Sewanee to just one three-pointer from Falvey in the first four minutes. However, the Tigers responded with an 18-13 rally to close out the first quarter, highlighted by back-to-back threes from Sedo and Keating-Rendon. Sewanee trailed 24-21 heading into the second.

Cleveland opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to tie the game. The teams traded baskets throughout, but Sewanee surged late with an 8-0 run in the final 75 seconds of the half, taking a 39-34 lead into the break.

Belhaven regained momentum after halftime, holding Sewanee scoreless for over a minute before Gavin's layup broke the drought. The Blazers tied the game at 44, but Falvey's three-pointer and Wright's free throw gave Sewanee the lead again. Belhaven then answered with a 7-0 run late in the third, entering the fourth quarter with a 56-53 advantage.

In the final period, the Blazers pulled away, using a 26-8 run to build a 20-point lead with 1:30 remaining. Sewanee struggled offensively, shooting just 2-of-10 from the field and 1-of-6 from beyond the arc during the stretch. Belhaven poured in 35 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Sewanee shot 36.4% from the field, 37.8% from three-point range, and 10-of-18 at the free-throw line. Belhaven finished 45.2% from the field, 37.5% from beyond the arc, and 65.8% at the stripe.

The Blazers tallied 15 second-chance points, 40 points in the paint, and 29 points on fast breaks, compared to five second-chance points by Sewanee.

Sewanee travels to Division I Georgia State for an exhibition game on Sunday before hosting Bob Jones University on Dec. 12.
