SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Cydney Wright scored 21 points and Sewanee used a 12-2 run early in the fourth quarter to break open a two-point game en route to a 74-62 victory over Bob Jones University in women's basketball action here Thursday night at Juhan Gymnasium.
Wright netted 11 of her 21 points in the final period, including seven of the 12 points in the decisive run. Freshman
Zoe Sedo netted 10 points off the bench,
Olivia Falvey collected 10 and
Hannah Cleveland added nine for the Tigers. All nine players who saw action in the game for Sewanee (4-4) got into the scoring column.
Anna Layne Wylder connected on a 3-pointer and Jenna Brooks netted two foul shots to start the fourth quarter, pulling the Bruins within, 51-49, but Sewanee put together a 12-2 run over the next four minutes. Wright posted seven points during the spurt, including an old-fashioned 3-point play to conclude the run, for a 63-51 advantage.
Brooks registered two free throws and recorded a layup, getting Bob Jones within eight, but the Tigers kept feeding the post and Wright delivered with another basket.
Grace Gavin and Falvey added layups after Bruins turnovers, stretching the lead to 69-55 with two minutes remaining.
Keely Price led the Bruins (4-7) with 18 points, 16 in the first half, but she was limited after halftime because of an ankle injury. Brooks finished with 15 points and Wylder recorded 11.
Price started a 6-0 run in the first quarter for the Bruins with a layup and Faith Hayward and Price added field goals for a 12-7 Bob Jones lead midway through the period. The Tigers answered with a 13-0 spurt that began with a layup from Wright.
The Bruins missed four shots and committed six turnovers during the Sewanee run. Falvey and Gavin converted baskets for the Tigers before a 3-pointer in the corner by
Lilly Phillips. Sedo netted two free throws and Wright's steal at midcourt and breakaway layup finished the run with Sewanee in front, 20-12.
Caitlyn Dickerson ended a four-minute scoring drought for the Bruins with a basket and another layup by Price in the final minute ended the quarter with the Tigers ahead, 20-16.
Brianna Keating-Rendon opened the second period with a triple for the Tigers but the teams traded missed shots and turnovers for more than two minutes before a layup by Dickerson. Price netted two more baskets, pulling the Bruins within, 23-22, and another layup for the Bob Jones freshman gave the visitors a one-point edge midway through the quarter.
Cleveland's turnaround in the lane ended a four-minute scoreless stretch for Sewanee and she added another field goal on the next offensive possession for the Tigers. The freshman scored again, extending the lead to 29-25 with 2:50 left in the half. The lead remained four at the half, with the Bruins netting just one point over the last five minutes and neither team scoring after Cleveland's last basket.
Price scored 16 of Bob Jones' 25 points in the first 20 minutes but the Bruins committed 14 turnovers that Sewanee turned into 16 points. The Tigers posted 16 miscues that led to 12 points for Bob Jones.
Wylder made a pair of 3-pointers to start the third quarter for the Bruins, but baskets by Cleveland and Falvey kept the Tigers in front. Layups by Hayward and Kayley Trump pushed the Bruins in front, 36-35, before a triple by Keating-Rendon put Sewanee back in the lead.
Price made a baseline jumper and Brooks connected on a layup for Bob Jones, making it a one-point game again, but Sedo answered with a pair of 3-pointers for the Tigers. The freshman added two free throws late in the quarter and Wright's basket in the final 10 seconds gave Sewanee a 51-44 advantage headed to the final period.
The Tigers host the Sewanee Classic on December 29-30 at Juhan Gymnasium, taking on Franklin College on Sunday at 1 p.m. and Huntingdon College on Monday at 2 p.m.
