SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Catherine Crane scored in the first and third quarters and Sewanee posted a 21-6 advantage in shots in a 4-1 victory over Marian University in the quarterfinals of the Collegiate Field Hockey Conference Championships here Thursday at Puett Field.
The Tigers (9-11) advance to the semifinals Friday at 11 a.m. CT, facing Rhodes College. Sewanee lost 3-1 and 3-2 to the Lynx over the last three weeks.
The Sabres (7-11) scored first in the match, an unassisted goal by Jikke Biemans five minutes into the first period, but the Tigers answered less than a minute later, with
Caroline Bridges crossing to Crane in front of the net for the equalizer.
Sewanee and Marian each posted six shots in the first quarter but the Tigers dominated the second period, outshooting the visitors, 8-0, and earning four corners (10 total in the first half).
Shepard Ramsey made a nice run down the left side and scored in the 26
th minute for Sewanee for a 2-1 lead. Crane registered two good scoring chances before the half but Marian goalkeeper Emilee Clarey collected six saves in the second period and nine in the opening 30 minutes.
After a corner to start the third quarter, Alexandra Schoener assisted on a
Natalie BeVier goal, extending the Tigers lead to 3-1 in the 31
st minute.
Sewanee added to the lead later in the period on a breakaway by
Mimi Wilson, who passed forward to BeVier and she found Crane. Her first shot was saved but she put in the rebound in the 39
th minute for a 4-1 advantage.
Clarey finished with 13 saves for the Sabres while Sewanee goalie
Taylor Klesel registered five saves in three periods of action.
