SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Savannah Gann led the Tigers with 12 kills and 11 digs, while
Sophia Caruso posted 21 digs, but Sewanee fell to Maryville in five sets on Tuesday night.
The Tigers served up 10 aces for the match. Sydney Bixby led with four aces, while Emma Meyer and Gann contributed two each. Suna Merkler and Nicole Radford each added one. Bixby also recorded 13 assists and six digs, while Gann notched her seventh double-double of the season with 11 digs. Mollie White added nine kills and three blocks, and Maria Kennedy tallied eight kills, 11 digs, two assists, one block assist, and an ace.
The match started with both teams making early errors, but Sewanee claimed a brief lead at 6-5 with a kill from White, a kill from Ella Reynolds, and an ace from Merkler. However, Maryville responded with an 11-1 run, capitalizing on Sewanee's mistakes, and ultimately took the first set, 25-14.
Sewanee regrouped in the second set, reducing their errors and committing only three attack errors compared to 14 in the first set. The Tigers went on a 7-3 run to build an 18-13 lead, prompting a Maryville timeout, and held on to win the set, 25-22.
In the third set, the teams traded points until Sewanee put together a three-point run to take a 13-9 lead. Benefiting from Maryville's errors, Sewanee maintained control and took the set, 25-19.
Maryville came out strong in the fourth set, limiting Sewanee's chances to gain momentum and cruising to a 25-9 victory to force a deciding fifth set.
In the final set, Maryville jumped to a 6-1 lead. Sewanee battled back with a 6-2 run, bringing the score to 7-8. Maryville earned their first match point on a Sewanee error, and though the Tigers fended off one match point, the Scots clinched the match with a kill for a 15-13 victory.
Sewanee will close out their regular season at Covenant on Saturday, before traveling to Danville, Ky. for the SAA Quarterfinals against Berry College on Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. CT/6 p.m. ET.
