SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Russ Marr tied his career high with 50 points as the Sewanee Tigers secured a 111-97 victory over McMurry in Longview, Texas.
Marr was stellar from the field, shooting 15-of-23 overall and 7-of-11 from beyond the arc. He added two rebounds, two assists, and two steals to cap his record night.
Fletcher Bigham posted a double-double with 20 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and a steal, while
Luka Avaliani chipped in 13 points, five rebounds, eight assists, two blocks, and a steal.
Sewanee shot 52% from the field and 42% from three-point range, connecting on 13 triples.
The Tigers opened the game with a 19-9 run, building a 10-point lead. Marr led the charge with 10 points during the stretch, supported by contributions from
Tre Corrigan, Bigham, and Avaliani. Although McMurry matched Sewanee's scoring for the rest of the half, the Tigers maintained their advantage, heading into the break with a 53-44 lead.
In the second half, the teams traded baskets before McMurry surged with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit. Marr quickly responded with six points of his own to restore Sewanee's 10-point cushion. McMurry countered with a 14-2 run, briefly taking a two-point lead with 10 minutes remaining. Two quick layups by Avaliani reclaimed the lead for Sewanee, but McMurry tied it again with free throws, setting the stage for a back-and-forth battle.
With the score knotted,
Reid Carrier and Marr knocked down consecutive three-pointers to spark a decisive 19-8 run. Sewanee built a 14-point lead with under a minute to play. McMurry added a late three-pointer, but Marr sealed the game at the line, going 3-of-4 on free throws to secure the Tigers' victory.
Sewanee returns to Juhan Gymnasium on Wednesday evening to host LaGrange before hitting the road for a four-game stretch.
