SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Olivia Falvey netted 23 points and Sewanee used a 13-4 over two-plus minutes to take a one-point lead with six seconds remaining, but Hayley Borino's heave from 25 feet at the buzzer touched nothing but the bottom of the net, giving Piedmont a 73-71 win against Sewanee in women's basketball action here Saturday at Juhan Gymnasium in the SAA-CCS Classic.
The Tigers (1-3) trailed 66-58 with 2:37 remaining after a 3-pointer from Piedmont's Ashley Scott, but the Lions (2-2) committed three turnovers with a pair of offensive fouls and made only 2-of-4 at the foul line until the final seconds.
Faith Humphrey's layup started the final run for Sewanee and
Cydney Wright and Falvey each netted a pair of foul shots, cutting the deficit to 66-64. Andelin Hill's layup for Piedmont pushed the visitors lead back to four with a minute left to play in the contest.
Nae-Nae Eades picked up a steal and was fouled on the other end for Piedmont, but netted just 1-of-2, and
Zoe Sedo's layup in the lane for the Tigers made it a three-point game with 30 seconds remaining. Riley Bryan connected on 1-of-2 foul shots on the other end for Piedmont and Falvey picked up an offensive rebound, dribbled to the corner and nailed a 3-pointer, for a one-point game.
The Lions advanced the ball after a timeout but the inbounds pass was errant, giving the ball back to the Tigers. Wright was fouled and made both free throws with 6.2 seconds to play, giving Sewanee a 71-70 edge.
Bryan took the inbounds pass but dribbled the ball off her foot on the way to the basket. The ball rolled toward the Piedmont sideline where Borino picked it up, stepped between two defenders and took the shot, drilling it at the final buzzer for the victory.
Wright recorded 11 points and eight rebounds despite missing much of the first half with foul trouble. Sedo added 11 points and four assists off the bench while Humphrey dished seven assists.
Hill posted a double-double for the Lions with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Kelsey Banks netted 13 points and Ashley Scott and Eades each collected 11.
The Tigers trailed 7-2 through the first four minutes of the contest but ran off 10 consecutive points, starting with a pair of layups by Sedo. Falvey made two free throws plus a field goal and a steal and layup from Sedo put Sewanee in front, 12-7, with three minutes left in the opening period.
Scott's field goal for the Lions ended the spurt, but Falvey and Shea Conn netted baskets for the Tigers.
Brianna Keating-Rendon netted consecutive 3-pointers, the last one in the final 10 seconds, for a 25-15 Sewanee advantage at the end of the period.
Falvey posted a triple to open the second quarter and her steal and layup followed by a jumper from Sedo pushed the lead to 33-21 midway through the period. Both teams went ice cold for the rest of the quarter, with a basket by Piedmont's Riley Bryan in the final 30 seconds ending an almost eight-minute drought for the visitors, but Sewanee took a 34-26 edge to intermission.
The Tigers shot 3-for-15 in the period but the Lions made only four field goals in the second stanza. Falvey led all scorers with 13 points and Sedo added nine off the bench.
Conn hit a 3-pointer to start the third quarter for Sewanee and after consecutive baskets by Hill,
Hannah Cleveland added triple for the Tigers. Eades made a 3-pointer for the Lions and field goals by Hill and Eades cut the Tigers lead to five, but Wright's layup just before the buzzer gave Sewanee a 50-43 advantage headed to the final 10 minutes.
The lead was four after a field goal by Wright with 6:39 to play, but Piedmont scored the next 14 points. Borino collected a pair of buckets and Banks and Eades both netted triples before the 3-pointer by Scott made it 66-58, setting up the final stretch.
Sewanee concludes the SAA-CCS Classic on Sunday at 2 p.m. against LaGrange College.
