Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Marr nets 33, but Tigers come up short at Berea

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Russ Marr tallied a game-high 33 points, but the Sewanee men's basketball team battled back from a double-digit second-half deficit but came up short in a 70-74 loss to Berea College on Saturday night inside the Seabury Center.

The first half was tightly contested, with both teams exchanging baskets. The Tigers closed out the first half with a late push thanks to an 11-2 run from the Tiger to close out the first half and get within five of Berea.

In the second half, Sewanee trailed by as many as 17 points before finding its rhythm midway through the period. Marr fueled a 9-0 run with a pair of three-pointers, cutting the deficit to 56-48 with under eight minutes remaining.

The Tigers continued to claw back, as Luka Avaliani's layup and subsequent free throw brought Sewanee within four points at 62-58 late in the game. However, Berea's clutch three-pointer and defensive stops in the closing minutes secured the victory for the Mountaineers.

Second-chance points proved critical, with Berea outscoring Sewanee 17-4 in that category.

Marr led all scorers with 33 points, including four three-pointers, while Fletcher Bigham contributed 10 points and five rebounds. Avaliani added eight points and seven boards.

For Berea, Tre Minter scored 25 points, and Demetris Phillips posted a double-double with 23 points and 16 rebounds.

Sewanee shot 37% (24-of-65) from the field and 24% (8-of-33) from three-point range, while Berea hit 38% (26-of-79) overall and 39% (12-of-31) from beyond the arc.

The Tigers will continue their road trip with a midweek game at Piedmont before heading to Texas for matchups against LeTourneau and McMurry.
